We’ve now passed one month into the U.S. government shutdown—and one month without COVID-19 or other infectious disease data updates from the CDC. COVID-19 levels seem to be in a lull between waves in much of the country, based on available sources, but the situation is uncertain. bit.ly/3JuWhdv

Regional and state-level data from WWSCAN and Biobot, as well as state health departments, suggest that COVID-19 levels are moderate or low and relatively stable throughout much of the country. But there are a few spots where late-fall COVID-19 outbreaks might be starting, and we are approaching the season for flu and RSV.

And here’s a bit of good data news, particularly for readers in New York State: New York’s wastewater dashboard is finally back to reporting data for all participating sewersheds. We had incomplete data for many months while scientists consolidated the program to run all through one state-run lab.

Recent stories by Tim Henderson at Stateline (republished by The Sick Times) and Laura Weiss at Prism echo what I’ve been writing here for weeks: the CDC data blackout, along with other cuts to the CDC under Trump, makes it even harder for Americans to protect themselves during the ongoing pandemic. “There’s a concerted effort to disassemble the CDC,” Demetre Daskalakis, a CDC official who recently resigned, told Prism.

That’s a problem because once over 50% of Americans are unwilling to vote for libraries, local ballot initiatives for libraries will fail at unprecedented rates.

We’ll also see legislators stop funding libraries because why would they fund something Americans don’t care about?

What’s absolutely wild is that 80-90%+ of library funding has been political for over a hundred years in this country.

And the only reason we exist and can serve our communities is because of funding.

This is something that no library organization has ever attempted to address.

About 90% of library funding comes from local taxes which are determined by local voters or local legislators.

3-5% comes from the state and 3-5% comes from the federal government.

That means 98% of library funding is political in nature.

Those with illnesses that make standing in long lines difficult will struggle to access food banks.

Parents of kids with AFRID, autism or other food issues will struggle.
