I said that to my daughter, but I was really hoping that everyone around me would hear it, because I could tell some of them were getting very annoyed.

Be annoyed at the situation, but not the employees. The work they put in tonight was worth far more than whatever they were paid.

It was refreshing to see other customers being polite, even if noticeably disappointed or annoyed.

When my daughter asked why it was taking so long, I explained that they were working as fast as they could. I also explained that when we get our pizza, we can go home. They’ll still be here working.

I took a few minutes tonight to send feedback to Papa John’s to praise their employees. The local joint received an order for 90 pizzas from a school, on top of the normal Friday evening surge. It was a madhouse. The front counter packed with customers; everyone in the kitchen was toiling in fury.

These leaders’ staff personnel are putting in lots of work to make this happen. That’s a limited gov’t resource that we’re using. I have no idea what the benefit is. And I suspect most of the public and most people within the military don’t know either. It’s a bad look. www.cnn.com/2025/10/09/p...
US Army accepting roughly $1 million donation to bring senior leaders to DC conference as troops brace for missed paycheck | CNN Politics

Anyone know whether a Service member who begins a PCS move after 1 October can get travel, per diem, and temporary lodging expenses reimbursed while the gov’t is shutdown?

A reminder (from my 2019 @theatlantic.com reporting) that as military families go without pay this shutdown, many of them are single-paycheck households relying on the servicemember's income because the spouses have been pushed out of the workforce.

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.

This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.

"They put me on suicide watch and they put me in the cell, I'm naked, in like a hospital dress and just a concrete bed with like a mattress, like a thin mattress and, they leave the light on 24/7."

I once (2013-ish) had a battalion commander make a comment in jest about attorneys. I reminded him that in an upcoming court-martial, every JA officer in the court room would have a CIB and RGR tab - something that could not be said about the IN officers in any one of his companies.

Not asking sarcastically or rhetorically.

What is the benefit to the Army of sending personnel to the AUSA conference?

I’m struggling to understand priorities when furloughed employees’ work gets backlogged or performed by soldiers, and organizations still scramble to send people to AUSA.

Also, more time in the gym. Less time in a box formation wasting your morning with burpees. These two show up every morning.

This is also a public service announcement and helpful reminder: you don’t need to train specifically for the test. Train to get stronger, faster, and improve your endurance. If you’re fit, you’ll do well on the test. Back squats and conventional barbell deadlifts have been adequate preparation.

The only times I touched a hex bar in the last 8 months were 2 PT sessions where we did a few reps with less than 250 lbs. I saw the new Army Fitness Test max score is 3 reps for 350 lbs. I wanted to confirm I can do that with no issues, so did a quick set of 5 at the end of my workout. #Lightweight

I’m accustomed to having to kill a few cockroaches in the basement shower at work each morning. But this morning some weird looking lizard wriggled its way out of the shower and fled across the room. WTH.

Glad I saw this. I just sent a note to all my folks to act now if they need assistance next week.

Support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, but you can sign up for an additional year of security updates (the option appears when you check for software updates). Highly recommended if your device is not compatible with Windows 11.

It annoys me to see people complain about old age when they watched 9/11 occur on a TV in their 3d grade classroom. I’m sure their knees hurt, but it has more to do with BMI than age.
Go see a doctor, get a referral to physical therapy, recover, and change your lifestyle to accommodate good habits.
timmathews.bsky.social
Your ailments are not due to age. They likely arise from inadequate sleep, poor nutrition, and suboptimal physical training.
You’re at risk of making these suboptimal lifestyle factors into long-term habits that will make you feel old and age rapidly. Change now, while you’re young. (3/3)

I frequently hear people in their 30s talk about “back in the day” and , “when you’re as old as me,” or how injuries don’t heal like they used to, or getting out of bed hurts, or aches and pains are a way of life. Maybe those things are real, but it’s not because you’re 35. (2/3)
timmathews.bsky.social
A weird quirk about the military that I observe more frequently is the propensity for young people to view themselves as old. I suppose part of this is because it’s a young population, so anyone over 30 can start to feel old. But it also seems like a lot of self-defeating talk. (1/3)

Does “stand with them” mean moral support? Or something more than that?

“Learning to Eat Soup With a Knife” could be the title of a book about armies as learning organizations during counterinsurgencies. It could also be a story about me packing my lunch and, nearly every day, forgetting to include a spoon.

It really is low security. In 2001, we did our mobilization training there for a Bosnia deployment. Several of us were looking for a vending machine during a break and we accidentally broke in to the prison.
