Hello new biology followers!

I teach biology at a PUI and sometimes write papers that use genetics to understand topics in both conservation- and evolutionary-biology.

Most often with fish!

Scientists: have you been the target of an online harassment campaign, doxxing, or weaponized FOIA requests? I'd like to talk to you about steps you had to take to protect your digital security for an upcoming Nature story. (You can be anonymous if necessary.)

RTs appreciated.

This is why I am (relatively) decent at science.
“Science, my lad, is made up of mistakes, but they are mistakes which it is useful to make, because they lead little by little to the truth.”

You might not like it, but this is what peak male performance looks like
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.

A chunk of Bsky users think I am terrible b/c:

a) I bought a physical dictionary, therefore I am ridiculously behind the times

and

b) I bought it from a well known online retailer rather than firing up my car to drive across town to get it.

{spoiler alert - I am waaay worse than that!}

This reminds me of writing scientific papers. It's satisfying. Your work is important. But also one of thousands of equally important papers to be published that week.

(And of course there's zero renumeration for academic papers. often you need to find a way to pay to get it published 🙄.)
I've only published one book. But the advice I find myself sharing with other nonfiction authors I encounter, when they ask is: lower all of your expectations for the book's post-publication response. Particularly any financial expectations.

It is extremely hard to make any kind of "splash."
