Happy family-tech-support-mas to my fellow geeks who observe this fascinating holiday tradition. Scholars believe that today’s festive new phone transfers, Bluetooth hearing aid pairings and wifi extender setups date back to the 1980s teenager fixing the 12:00 VCR, and possibly even further.

Trump's all-purpose excuse to avoid answering questions used to be "we'll have it in two weeks."

In 2025, that shifted. Now it's just "I don't know."

To hear Trump talk, he knows absolutely nothing.

I analyze what this shift means.

I once worked with an executive editor who came into the job from public relations. This is the kind of rule she would make up out of thin air. It not only prevented us from doing journalism but revealed her lack of experience in journalism.
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

This is the one I can’t get over, because for all the handwringing about out-of-touch liberal media elites, none of them would’ve ever thought that Middle America wants to hear, “Great news, we’ve got a Harvard professor and a New York Times columnist lined up to debate whether you need God.”

prunning grapevines in Fresno CA. They get paid by the row making $45 per row which takes around 4 hours to prune. They wake up at 5am when it's cold outside and drop their kids at a babysitter. They can barely pay the bills with these low wages. #WeFeedYou

I think it’s pretty likely Bari Weiss quits far sooner than anyone expects because if there’s anything we learned from her tenure at the New York Times it’s that this lady hates working, absolutely despises it, and she probably had to send like four emails today

Because it’s not just Bari Weiss’ CBS asking this question—in the last few months, I’ve been approached by half a dozen different shows looking to ‘debate’ the same topic.

I even got a request from NPR-distributed “Open to Debate” to see if I’d weigh in on “Has Feminism Hurt Women?”

Love this. We should all do a thread about serendipitous discoveries in the archives. Me? I found a murder mystery in my hotel workers history.
Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

Fun fact: It’s easy to keep premiums low when you only have to insure healthy people.
LANKFORD: In 2010, before Obamacare kicked in, the normal healthcare premium was $215.

HUNT: Right. But insurance companies could refuse to cover you for a preexisting condition

LANKFORD: That's true.

I'm just gonna say, if there was red hot dirt on Bill, their favorite distraction when Trump is accused of sex crimes, they wouldn't feel the need to play these games.
The White House has been caught.

The administration inserted a photo of Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross into the Epstein files and falsely implied it showed them with victims.

In reality, it’s a publicly available fundraiser photo featuring Jackson and Ross’s own children.

"The emergence of Witkoff as envoy to the Kremlin is partly a story of Putin maneuvering to nudge aside America’s diplomats and clasp hands with its billionaires." Because the billionaires lack experience, can be manipulated. and have obvious conflicts of interest.
Everything in this story is remarkable, besides this part:

"For three hours, Putin hosted Witkoff, who took notes as the president gave a lecture on the 1,000-year history of Russia"

They are so lucky that we are so stupid. Gullible. Unprofessional. Corrupt. Naive.
Witkoff’s Other Backer in His Unlikely Diplomatic Ascent: Putin
The Kremlin release of an American prisoner and a Saudi backchannel bolstered the rise of Trump’s longtime friend.
