I've been studying the history of US, and indeed, global policing my whole career and I can't make it more clear to law makers that this isn't a bastardization of policing, it is its purest form and logical conclusion. The impunity, militarization, deference, legitimacy, racial targeting, etc.

a point of pedantry: they're not Trump's gestapo, they're Trump's SA (the sturmabteilung, a.k.a. the stormtroopers or brownshirts)

Imagine what’s happening in the camps.
Imagine how much they’d be lying about what happened without all the videos showing it from multiple angles.

The long tail of the fund the police movement is killing free society.
Most of this year's ICE budget comes from last year's reconciliation bill. House Democratic leaders discouraged its members from offering amendments eliminating that funding. Didn't want the party to come across as anti-ICE.

while i do think yves has been acting like a clown around the ndp leadership race, and i would not like him to win that, this case against him is absurd. a police detective claimed he was intimidating her because his supporters sent her e-mails through an online petition: absolute horseshit
Yves Engler found guilty of harassment over mass e-mail campaign directed at detective
Left-wing activist, who was barred from running in NDP race, was also convicted of obstruction of justice

hope our boy gil is taking some detailed notes this week
Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act in 1947 (over Truman's veto) to make general strikes so incredibly difficult to organize that there hasn't been one since.

That there is a general strike happening in a major US city on such short notice is nothing short of a miracle.
National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

what i find particularly funny (?) about the anti-infill campaigning is the cross-pollination with people slamming city hall for edmonton's snow-clearing struggles this year. a significant driver of each just seems to be conservatives jumping on any excuse to campaign against council
In the latest episode of their video program 'Oh The Urbanity!', @ohtheurbanity.bsky.social call out Edmonton's city admin and councilors for signaling that they may compromise their densification plan in an upcoming vote in February that would cap infill residences to six units.

I think it's funny that Stephen Miller wants Bill Shatner to have creative control over Star Trek because Bill Shatner had creative control over TekWar
I just think it's funny that Stephen Miller wants Bill Shatner to have creative control over Star Trek because there was a time when he did and he made a delightfully camp 80s sci-fi romp about three confirmed bachelors and their journey to the center of the galaxy to question God to his face.

Quite frankly, it’s outrageous that Mark Carney is cutting Statistics Canada. If he was Stephen Harper or Pierre Poilievre, I feel like this would be getting a lot more backlash.

Carney of all people should know the importance of high-quality data and information about the country.

The X situation is an excellent example of the perils of neoliberalism. The state has become so beholden to a private service provider for public service announcements, they're resorting to equivocation on responsibility for CSAM and violent misogyny on that platform rather than risk losing it.
