We should pursue strategic autonomy - but too many people are taking as though European nations are all powerfully, politically cohesive and prepared for the future. Until we tackle our fundamental weaknesses we will failed and drift into further subservience.

It is - among other things - a cost of living issue. Standing up to the US will require significant sacrifice from the electorate. It really will. I am not sure that a lot of voters are prepared for that. They will be susceptible to arguments that there are easy solutions. There are not.
Starmer framing Greenland as a Costa Livin issue. Rail fares! The price of groceries! Bizarre segue.

I'm perfectly aware this is by far not the worst thing he's done, but Trump's constant presence - day after day after day - in the lives and headspaces of hundreds of millions of people (billions?), in the US and outside, is so taxing. Every morning, we wake up and have to think about this asshole.

The Jenrick frenzy proves how deeply unserious UK politics has become

A source confirms to me that this disturbing letter from Trump to the Norwegian PM is real.
Not the sort of letter committed to paper by a well man. "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace"

I'm honestly less mad at the President, who is clearly not well, that I am at his outriders and enablers.

They see messages like this and then, with straight faces, go on television or write op-eds retroactively constructing grand strategy justifications.

Pathetic.

The incredibly lukewarm Democratic response on Greenland is being noticed in Europe, incidentally.

Chuck Schumer not finding a stronger word than “quixotic” for Trump’s plan to seize Greenland has been name checked to me more than once.
But Americans who want to save the alliance with Europe must have no illusions about how bad a condition this transatlantic partnership is in.

I love the fact that one of Rosindell's reasons for leaving is 'Blah Blah Chagos'.

The Right loves a bit of 'Blah Blah Chagos'.
Andrew Rosindell MP has announced tonight that he is leaving the Conservatives for Reform, taking Reform to 7 MPs (3 of the 5 elected as Reform in 2024 + 3 elected as Conservatives + 1 Reform by-election winner) with the Conservatives on 117.

Rossindale… I mean there’s the barrel, there’s the bottom of the barrel and there’s the hole so deep under the barrel you’re actually at the Earth’s core.
As someone just said to me via WhatsApp, there’s mounting curiosity across Westminster as to just who Reform *wouldn’t* accept as a defector, at this stage.
