I read Las Casas while I was studying Spanish at university. He went out with the intention of 'civilising the natives' and realised the horrible truth of colonisation. He was a brave man, with the integrity to see what his own people were doing and to call it out.

I'm reading 'The Storm is Here: America on the Brink' by Luke Mogelson. An extremely brave and disturbing analysis of the dismantling of democracy in the last days of the first Trump presidency. Written in 2020, much of it has been borne out even more clearly since.
Cover of The Storm is Here by Luke Mogelson, showing people in masks with weapons and US flags in front of the Capitol.

Thinking of Dorothy Parker's quip: 'This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force.'

A Gray Catbird is partially obscured in a mulberry tree. The bird is surrounded by green leaves and mulberry fruit at various stages of ripeness.

There's something very happy-making about polka dots, especially red and white ones.

You don’t like bagpipes,
But they make me feel wistful,
Dreaming of green hills.

Still very true now.
Man asking woman what she thinks the future will bring and she says 'I am planting flowers, so I think the future will bring flowers'.
