I have TWO books coming out in the next six months!! I'll be talking lots about:

📘Tea & Treachery at the Infinite Pantry
📗The Final Chronicle of Yeneh

I'm super excited, and both are very "me," but very different from each other, so it's bound to get confusing. (Even for me lol). In a nutshell:
Tea & Treachery at the Infinite Pantry feels like curling up with a warm mug of tea. And you can preorder it now!

Alright, where are my gifted kids at? You were smart and you never had to study and then you went to college and suddenly had to learn a new skillset overnight, that everybody else had years to learn, or flame out spectacularly?

That’s what talent is like.
In my experience, talent is a *detriment* to learning.

I didn't have to practice early on so I *didn't know how*. I didn't start to learn how to practice until my 30s! (When much of my life was taken up with parenting, so I didn't have time!)

I didn't start to improve as a musician until my 40s!
I'm going to say this again in case you haven't heard this one: I was a talented writer and it did *nothing whatsoever* because I hadn't put in the work, and I put in the work for ten years (subtracting the bit where I had to quit for my mental health) to write Witchmark

talent alone could *never*

In Hornytown Chutzpah, Detective Sol Weiss enters Hell armed with a super soaker loaded with Manischewitz. I thought it'd be cute to do a book promo video about what that looked like. TBS, I asked @theradr.bsky.social if it was Kosher.

So an odd thing here is that if you say "an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume" your point is to communicate "it is not really Batman" but the problem is that the real Batman, within the fiction of the comic book "Batman", is also, literally, an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume
An unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume angrily confronted Santa Clara city officials during a joint meeting of the City Council, city authorities, and the Santa Clara Stadium Authority on Monday, using his public comment to condemn the city’s stance on cooperation with ICE.

I got to read a recent version of this and it's great! Totally non-stop bonkers (in the best way), you all are going to love it.
I have a new novel coming out next year from Erewhon Books! It's Bridgerton meets Battlestar with a bit of Gideon the Ninth, and my agent called it "unhinged" (in the best way possible). I can't wait to share it with you!

This month's newsletter is out!

In which I mull the awkwardness of promoting books when the world is burning, and why we need to keep creating stories and why that act in itself is part of resistance. Also some book recs. jomiles.optin.com/newsletter/a...

Sleet is inevitable Sunday-freezing rain is what worries us.

Sleet bounces off trees & power lines. Freezing rain glazes them & that’s when outages become a risk. It's like a sprinkled donut (sleet) vs a glazed donut (freezing rain).

Look, I'm going to tell you a secret. If you buy an e-book while it's on sale, you never have to read it. If you have $2 to spare & want to help that particular author, you can just chuck the book into the oubliette of your TBR. Every sale helps. The author will never know, but you gave them a gift.

Another secret! Book reviews don't have to be extensive and thoughtful and deep. You can give a book 5 stars and say nothing, or you can say, "Really enjoyed it!" or "Lovely worldbuilding!" or "One of my favorite authors!" No one expects a thesis. Every review helps.

My story in the new issue of Analog, "A Chatbot's Guide to Self-Respect," takes on one narrow slice of what's wrong with how we're using AI today.

It includes a therapy-bot based on Eliza, the very first chatbot. Not until writing this did I learn how cool Eliza's creator Joseph Weizenbaum was:
Weizenbaum’s nightmares: how the inventor of the first chatbot turned against AI
Computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum was there at the dawn of artificial intelligence – but he was also adamant that we must never confuse computers with humans
