And invests no money in content or creators or any infrastructure of programme making, does no training, cannot support collaborative projects efficiently, and has an opaque payment system that mitigates against what the public would understand as “making television”.

It was 30 years ago today that BBC Two transmitted the opening episode of Our Friends in the North - one of the greatest television dramas the BBC has ever made.

For the anniversary, I've been down to Caversham to take a look through the show's files and explore some of the tales they tell...

Lots of drama queen moves in this season of #TheTraitors - you can see people going for their memorable moment. Bound to happen when people have seen enough to know how to work the show’s format.

We’ll be accompanying the amnesiac Doctor all the way through on his century long sojourn on Earth, beginning with a literal scorched earth policy for the EDAs.
We look at Doctor Who arc in print - the 'Caught on Earth' arc that kick starts with The Burning. The Doctor has no memory, and a fiery force is awake from the ground to take over theEarth...

In which Ben Aaronovitch casually strolls in and does Iain Banks better than Banks himself could.
We're going on holiday to a Dyson's sphere but there's been a murder. Along the way there is some stunning worldbuilding and extraordinary character development; particularly of Roz and Benny

Listened to most of 'Bowie Day' (11 Jan 2016) yesterday and it *really does* have the feel of a turning point.

Amazing bit where Lauren read out a listener's text that was *literally* "my youth is dead, the golden days are over, where will the new voices come from?"

(she politely disagreed fwiw)

It’s a hell of a trudge til the end of the season from here for United. Looking well short on hope or even what passes for entertainment at Old Trafford these days.

Not a proponent of the ‘Bowie’s death was when it all went to shit’ theory, but I do think it was one of the best examples of what made social media worthwhile. It allowed for a communal grieving experience, the telling of stories and processing of shock. It let all the lonely people find each other

2025 is the first year in maybe 15 where I stopped tracking what my favorite new albums were and just spent time listening to things I liked. As such, I have no Best of 2025 list and it feels liberating to be free of an obligation entirely of my own making.
