I took a deep dive into Meta’s “Hyperion” data center in Richland Parish, LA. The story of a tech behemoth coming bearing billions to a poor community like Richland Parish is complex and worthy of scrutiny. 🧵 1/7

Seen some people suggesting the new shooting video is AI because you can see a dinosaur in the background at one point. But, uh, there’s just a dinosaur on a car on that street. Here’s Google Street View.

Any other app would have absolutely been pulled. Apple and Google need to explain this.
Thousands of people on X are using Grok to create sexualized images of adults + minors wearing minimal clothing. This not only violates X's own content policy, it may violate the guidelines of Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store:

Why Are Grok and X Still Available in App Stores?
Elon Musk’s chatbot has been used to generate thousands of sexualized images of adults and apparent minors. Apple and Google have removed other “nudify” apps—but continue to host X and Grok.

Using imagery online of the shooting by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, we’ve created an animated sequence which highlights the approximate positioning of officers and vehicles at the scene. The red dot represents the agent who fired the shots. Yellow dots are other agents who arrived at the scene.

Here's the sort of thing Webloc can do:
- zoom in on specific phone, see where else that device has been locally or around country
- click a 'route' button to see the specific route
- click a nighttime button to see where at night; their likely home

California's website that helps residents block hundreds of data brokers at once is now live. @themarkup.org and @calmatters.org gave it a try and decided — we need to make a guide: themarkup.org/privacy/2026...

A tool called DROP lets California residents fill out a few forms to keep their personal data from being tracked or sold by data brokers.

Okay, remember in 2024 when RFK Jr. admitted he dumped a dead black bear cub in Central Park in 2014? An event that was a NY mystery for a decade?

if this story has also haunted you...... I got new docs, emails, & pics about it from NYC's Dept of Parks & Rec via FOIA:

NEW: X/Twitters continue to freely use xAI's Grok to generate and disseminate nonconsensual explicit deepfakes of real women and underage girls.

Neither X nor xAI have taken meaningful action to fix the issue. So we're following that inaction live:

These performative perp walks only build up the subject as some sort of powerful super-villain mastermind. Drop him off on the street in a Crown Vic flanked by two frumpy FBI agents in windbreakers. Mark Ruffalo’s character from “Task.”

Unbelievable. The National Weather Service issued a wind warning supported by a hazard map showing places that **do not exist***.
Wait a minute...why is NWS throwing out genAI generated slop on their socials?

This is a horrible look and doesn't help keep people safe or aware of the forecast.

1. Headlines everywhere today read "Grok apologizes."

This is bullshit. A chatbot is not something that can apologize.

Pretending otherwise is simple laundering these companies' bullshit about what AI is, while diffusing blame away from the human beings that developed and released this system.

One of my favorite side projects this year was my story for @technologyreview.com about the history of the Armatron robotic toy. I had one as a kid, and it is a miracle of mechanical engineering. I got to interview its inventor, retired toy designer Hiroyuki Watanabe.

The tasks taken on by the Armatron aren’t so different from the ones AI is tackling today.
