Liverpool, politics, theatre, wine, cricket, travel, Eurovison, family, republican (in the UK sense not US) - and more. Wry observations. General disdain.

I appear to have upset the hard left again this evening. My apparent crime: suggesting that government financial support for big, failing firms to protect jobs might be better than letting them go bust and causing mass unemployment.

Perish the thought the hard left would care about jobs.

On Truss & Kwarteng in ‘22. Allister Heath, Telegraph: “the best budget I have ever heard a British chancellor deliver". Alex Brummer, Mail: “a genuine Tory package elbowing to one side the Treasury's fiscal conservatism".
These men will now be paid actual money for their analysis of today’s budget.

Reading The Times' ridiculously negative headlines about the budget. They appear to have been listening to an entirely different budget to me.

And, after all, the more difficult decisions had to be taken because of their Tory mates' gross economic incompetence.

The odds on Rachel Reeves becoming the next PM must have shortened in the past hour.

I posted something on LinkedIn about life / work balance, and it seems to have gone somewhat viral. 273,000 impressions and counting. Wow. And only one nasty comment - presumably from someone who doesn't care about life / work balance.

The BBC have lost the plot entirely. This is a disgrace.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Looking forward to an afternoon of Tory hypocrisy as they criticise Labour for trying to sort out 14 years of mismanaging public finances and running public services into the ground.

Here endeth an hour of brilliant music.

Has there ever been a better musical year than 1981? I think not.

And then one of the greatest pieces of pop music ever...

Saw The Human League live this summer. They were absolutely superb.

It's her party and she'll cry if she wants to. Will you find her in the kitchen then? And perhaps not for the first time: surely it's party fears two...

Sorry!

Liverpool was such a great city musically when I was growing up. Music, football and our history - all we could hold on to be proud of, in dark times for the city. #totp

Former Finnish PM Sanna Marin put it bluntly: “To end the conflict, Russia must leave Ukrainian territory.”

Just one point. Nothing more to discuss.

According to the Guardian, we shouldn't be laying the table for dinner. We should be tablescaping.

I'm guessing the author lives in a leafy north London suburb.

This, from the Guardian, is Ryanair at its very worst.

It's not good enough for them to insist that they're a low-cost airline and everyone knows the rules, in circumstances like this...

I wonder if legislation is needed?

Is it morally acceptable to eat a slice of Aldi Christmas cake in November?

(But oh my goodness it's excellent... If you'd told me it was from say Fortnum's or Harrods, I'd have believed you.)

Much as I hate Remain - and the Russian regime - is 10.5 years not excessive for taking a £30k bribe? Locking someone up for any time is a real punishment: are we any better served if he got 10.5 years rather than (say) 2? It's no wonder prisons are overcrowded when we imprison people for too long.
