Almost midnight in Kyiv.
Calm.
We have power, water.
Drops of rain gently sing a lullaby
to those who didn’t sleep last night.

Please, don’t take for granted
the quiet treasures you have –
power, water, windows, a roof.

The inability of the US and Europe to build an own supply of rare earth refining - knowing for years it was a huge vulnerability - must be one of the most catastrophic policy failures of the decade.

One reason it‘s hard: the West cannot free trade its way out when China controls the price mechanism

This strikes me as a pretty major Brexit shift from Starmer.

Perhaps the beginning of 'Brexit is sh1t and has caused real economic damage'.

Fewer than 1 in 10 of our Congressional races are considered competitive - in a country that's politically more or less 50-50.

This is madness. And it doesn't have to be this way.

"they are becoming very hostile, and sending letters to countries throughout the world... nobody has ever seen anything like this..." er, hang on, did I imagine a President with a tariff board at the start of April?

Trump on China: “We have been contacted by other Countries who are extremely angry at this great Trade hostility, which came out of nowhere.”

(1/3)
Some very strange things are happening in China! They are becoming very hostile, and sending letters to Countries throughout the World, that they want to impose Export Controls on each and every element of production having to do with Rare Earths, and virtually anything else they can think of, even if it's not manufactured in China. Nobody has ever seen anything like this but, essentially, it would "clog" the Markets, and make life difficult for virtually every Country in the World, especially for China.
We have been contacted by other Countries who are extremely angry at this great Trade hostility, which came out of nowhere. Our relationship with China over the past six months has been a very good one, thereby making this move on Trade an even more surprising one. I have always felt that they've been lying in wait, and now, as usual, l have been proven right! There is no way that China should be allowed to hold the World
"captive," but that seems to have been their plan for quite some time, starting with the "Magnets" and, other Elements that they have quietly amassed into somewhat of a Monopoly position, a rather sinister and hostile move, to say the least. But the U.S. has Monopoly positions also,

So, the UK is about as ready for Farrage as the US was for Trump. A bit concerning.
jorntychsen.bsky.social

On tariffs, there wasn't a lot the EU (or anyone else) could do to push back on the US damaging itself. On regulation, a lot more important to draw the line as is happening

Just because someone isn't Trump, doesn't mean they are the last hope for liberal democracy

Yes, Machado does lead the opposition against an authoritarian leader

But to temper your excitement: she also just spoke at Spain's far-right party VOX conference alongside Orbán, Kickl, and Milei...

Congratulations to Maria Corina Machado, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize - her incredible optimism has already changed her country. I spoke to her, and wrote about her, at the beginning of this year:

"... over two thirds of all [US] nitrogen fertilizer applications are for corn" 😵

And around 40% of the corn is for biofuel.

Crop-based biofuel is just the worst idea ever, climate-wise.

Explosions in Kyiv as Ukraine’s capital and its energy facilities come under “massive” Russian missile and drone attack, according to Ministry of Energy. Mayor Klitschko reported power and outages. I briefly lost power in city center. As I type this, Ukraine’s air defenses are countering drones…

A series of massive Russian air strikes in the past week have disabled nearly 60 per cent of Ukraine’s gas production, raising fears of winter shortages.

jorntychsen.bsky.social
