For Frankie Stein, she's a 12-year-old oddball, with no friends and a penchant for collecting deceased animals (and using them to revivify a friend just for her). The Birthday Massacre and other goth rock style fits nicely for Frankie.

I always make playlists for entire projects. Case in point:

Frankie Stein - lots of goth type rock (The Birthday Massacre, Dogma, HIM)

Frida Fuego - about a 10-year-old hot headed super hero that features lots of ska and punk (PUP, Sum 41, Less than Jake)

#LateNightWrite Welcome back! I’m in a playlist mood tonight and about to make it everyone’s problem! Do you often make playlists for your WIPs or characters? (spoiler: if you don't, you're about to!)

I'm super late to this (only just found it), but thought I would join in. I'm Joshua, and I write/illustrate early reader/middle grade graphic novels. Currently working on Frankie Stein about a desperate oddball replacing her need for human connection with revivified amalgamations. #LateNightWrite

Wish I could say I was good at any of it, but that remains to be seen. I get nice comments about the art, however, that's not actually led to anything. Unfortunately I don't have any tips, only wishing others good luck in their pursuits. #kidlitchat

Also, I initially had Wendy the Wendigo in place of Jackie, but I could never bring myself to use her considering the history of the wendigo. Just didn't seem right to use that for a goofy humorous adventure.

This is an idea that's been rattling around in my noggin for a good while now. Cryptid Scouts (like the Cub Scouts, but for cryptids). Never really developed it too much. What constitutes a cryptid seems to be a pretty divisive conversation. In fact, pretty sure only Sassy in this instance is one.
3 photos pinned to a tree, featuring goofy characters of Mo the Mothman, Jackie the Jackalope, and Sassy the Sasquatch. All members of the Cryptid Scouts.

I need to finish layouts for chapter one of my graphic novel pitch, and take them all the way to pencils at the very least. Start getting pitch packet laid out and finish up some of the writing on the outline. Hope to have the pitch packet done by the end of the month and ready to send out.

That's something I'm trying to get better at: writing for graphic novels. Agents and editors I've talked with have always liked the art I submit, but the writing, not so much. I've been working on several projects throughout the year aiming to get better at it. Hopefully I have gotten better.

Made this character, Frida Fuego, and her comic idea a year ago now. Time flies so fast nowadays. Maybe one day I will pick her back up and create a more solid story for her. #kidlit #kidlitart
10-year-old super hero Frida Fuego, kitted out in her luchador inspired outfit, hangs out on a rooftop.

Looks like a cozy middle grade horror. The work on your portfolio is really rad as well.

This looks like a super soft blanket feels. Cool stuff.

The color on this makes it feel so cozy. Awesome stuff!

This is so awesome. I love textured work you get with your illustrations.

Oof, that's rough. It's the opposite for me. My family will tell me I'm doing my best, but I don't think my best is enough most of the time.

Haha, this one is super cute. Brings back a lot of nostalgic memories.

Heck yeah! Give me a whole book of this witch and her adventures.

Yo, I love the textures in your work. Great stuff.

I can definitely relate. I don't have a cat, but I do have a dog named Whiskers, and vehemently hates anytime I get near his nails with a pair of clippers.

12-year-old Frankie Stein maddeningly stands amongst her laboratory, syringe and bone saw in hand with one of her newly reanimated creatures ready to exit its chamber. A yellow-orange gaseous smoke billows all throughout the room. Image header reads "Frankie Stein, Joshua Chennault, Author/Illustrator, Currently Seeking Representation. And since I am on that horror kick, another book from childhood I liked was The Thief of Always by Clive Barker.

TOPIC: What were your own favorite books from childhood? (Extra points if they're in the same genre you create now.) Do you ever revisit them for inspiration? #kidlitchat

Yep. The Haunted Mask came out last year and this year was Monster Blood. I hope they keep making them. I mean, it is Goosebumps, that series is kinda immortal at this point, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed that one is released each year for a while.
