Jeremy and I wrote this over the weekend and it was supposed to be an optimistic piece. It still is, despite the rollercoaster ride of today‘s election. We see reason for hope when it comes to German foreign policy and the country’s role in Europe.

From fence-sitter to pace-setter: How Merz’s Germany can lead Europe
On foreign policy, Germany’s new chancellor will be pulled between conservatism and radicalism. For Europe’s sake, he must choose the latter

Salt yes, but to me this was a feature, not a bug. I have watched this now for quite some time and he clearly thinks about NATO as a European organization (supported by the US, if we pay).

What I find most telling is that Trump said to Stubb: „Maybe you should throw 'em out of NATO frankly.“ He says YOU, not WE. And that is not a coincidence. Trumps talks about NATO as a third party all the time. www.reuters.com/business/aer...

And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

To my fellow French friends (and everybody who claims to understand French politics): how likely is it that France will see early PRESIDENTIAL elections? (Something that I was told would never happen. But this was before today). So?

My latest.

But even this is tricky. Many European countries see buying US weapons as part of their insurance fee. This perpetuates dependency. But „buying European“ is oftentimes not even possible, for the lack of available products (e.g. 5th generation fighter jets). It‘s about managing dependencies imo.

Still the best explanation of Russian tactics and the difficulty of deterrence.

Qatar has now been bombed by both Iran and Israel, while hosting a major US base. This has serious implications on the meaning - or lack thereof - of hosting US military as well as just how inconvenient it is to be a mediator in this day and age.

On the DoD security assistance cuts to Europe, there is a reasonable case that US sec assistance should not be going to European Union countries. I think the aid was justified given Russia's invasion but a phase out is a sensible. The EU is wealthy and aid s/d largely go to poorer countries.

I think „whitewashing campaign“ nails it.
