(His time there and my wife's did not overlap as he died in 1984 when she was three years old. Also there are still some of his crayon drawings in the archive there.)

He wasn't even a serial killer! He confessed to two murders. He lived out the rest of his days in the state insane asylum (where my wife currently works as a psychiatrist), and was, by all accounts, a very pleasant man to deal with. He made crayon drawings and went to dances. He just liked corpses.

One of my favorite historical points is that Roman Britain had Syrian archers along Hadrian’s Wall. You just know there’s someone in Cumbria or Northumberland complaining about migrants from the Middle East, but who’s grandad x 300 was a Syrian archer.

Even if we WERE making less than Scrooge's clerk (we most definitely are not), I would take the trade for modern standards of living. Number of children I've seen weeping parents bury due to preventable disease: zero. Number of times I've had cholera: zero. Also? Sewers fucking RULE.
