The depths of pain and human suffering Jonathan Ross should experience go beyond what pain the state can inflict.
More security theater meant to placate rich parents than anything else.
I get why Savannah College of Art & Design would give money directly to the Savannah Police Department. It's basically an investment in campus security, since their buildings are so symbiotically distributed throughout the historic district. But…

Brian is being incredibly restrained, since City Journal is quite literally blaming domestic violence survivors for their victimization and the downstream effects on their housing:

Also a lot of homeless people have been abused by "good Samaritans" offering a place to stay! People don't want to couchsurf with a stranger! They want their own home, with a door that locks, that they have control over.
“why don’t you let them stay with you then?”

our city now fines home/biz owners for allowing people to camp or park RVs on their own private property. and of course renters like me risk our own housing by letting people stay with us who aren’t on the lease. which we are currently doing anyway.

People are homeless because they can’t afford rent.

There’s so so many reasons people can’t afford rent! All entrenched in legacies of racism & classism! But end of the day people are homeless because they can’t afford rent.
Positively shocked that the house magazine of the Manhattan Institute is upset that my book refuses to attribute America's record-high homelessness to "personal choices"—rather than, say, rents outpacing income gains by 325 percent since 1985.

Episcopal cake sucks ass! You're signing up for shitty cake and coffee??????
It's literally "I signed up for cake"
can u imagine being not only a baptized christian but an ordained priest and then, when NPR asks you about the Bishop of New Hampshire's comments last week, what you find to say is "I didn't sign up to be a martyr"??
January 18, 2026 at 3:31 PM
I've literally heard an Episcopal priest quote that line specifically.
I am reminded of this quote from former Texas politician Jim Hightower: “There's nothing in the middle of the road but a yellow stripe and dead armadillos.”

Anyway if you would like to antagonize Rev. Tim Gartin of Faith Episcopal Church for his cowardice in the face of fascism and his dishonoring of the legacy of Jonathan Daniels z"l, the church email is here: [email protected]

Contrary to certain oversimplified privilege discourses, sometimes more power in a social hierarchy means more to lose, & thus complicity.

And movement history reflects this. Leaders come from many social strata, but those with a modicum of institutional power are sometimes slower to get on board.

One thing that strikes me here is that it has indeed been “lower-level” regular folks who have the most willingness to stand up to ICE

We can debate who *should* bear the burden of opposition. Or we can look at who is already doing so right now, and ask how to support and protect them.
The general theme of this commentary is "stop asking MN companies to ban ICE from their properties." The argument is that enforcing the ban would fall to individual low-paid employees, who would be placed in danger.

I suspect a toxic person gaining unearned authority because of horizontalism.
the dominant "rapid response" group in DC is deliberately discouraging the use of whistles and offering no alternative system to alert people who are in immediate danger. wrecker behavior at best, at worst infiltration.

There was a similar flowering of Black American public intellectuals culminating in the 2016-2024 period, and I'd argue the anti-Woke backlash was in many ways a reaction to the threat this posed to the outclassed white punditocracy, for whom meritocracy and DEI hire was a way to disqualify them.
Just finished this right after having read @hofrench.bsky.social's Second Emancipation, and it convinced me that the African & African diaspora anti-colonial thinkers of the 1940-1975 period constituted one of the great intellectual movements in the history of humankind.

Second Enlightenment level.
We think of the postwar world order as having been built by the US. But as Getachew makes clear, that world order was completed by the intellectual giants of the African, pan-African and African diaspora liberation movements.

It is no coincidence Trump & Miller are targeting its fundamental tenet.
