As of today, I am officially retired! I expect my life to change, well, not at all, at least for now (I was already not teaching because it was summer, I still have my research group, and my last grad student will still be at it for a while), but it’s the beginning of the end, anyway.

Can confirm. My American friends and family—all educated people who pay reasonable attention to the world around them—know about Canada’s reactions to the current US situation from me and me only. And sometimes I still have to remind them.
I was in the USA this past week. For work, not optional. I was chatting with one of my new coworkers, who lives in Florida. He asked how Canadians are feeling about “everything” and I told him about the anger and the boycotts and the signs in our grocery stores helping us avoid American products.

I’ve started a slack to try to organize Halifax Regional Municipality 2026 budget advocacy better. We’re specifically pushing for fiscal sustainability and actual serious consideration of revenue, and against frivolous nickel and diming, and want to organize letter writing and council presentations.

Bike lanes should be paid for by the folks who use them albeit very few. All of our resources between the 3 levels of government should be focused on greatly improving our Transit system here in HRM.
I’m hoping for a dedicated Transit lane across the Mag Hill so more folks can get out of their cars

So much of the bad stuff that’s going on at my former employer is down to Nous. This is not. This is down to direct government interference.

When our friends became the provincial government while we were living in Edmonton, I remember feeling worried they were miserable. Every time I saw one of them, I’d ask about it. In Halifax, I feel that way about my city councillor (who is not a friend, but she’s great and I hope not miserable!).

I have absolutely no memory of how I got everything done when I was actually working full-time. Somehow I did, for years. It's a mystery.

Relatedly, people who get bored after retirement puzzle me.

@tsrhg.bsky.social hi! I believe you wanted to repost the information about the vaccine study, right? You actually reposted my post about my prior vaccine history. Would you mind undoing the repost on that and reposting the quoted post about the study instead?
February 5, 2026 at 1:54 PM
I’m excluded from the study because one of my many prior COVID vaccinations was with the early AstraZeneca vaccine. So bummed!

Ah well, my masking behaviour should probably have been an exclusion criterion anyway.
Halifax! There is a trial of an inhaled vaccine for COVID that you can enrol in right now!

Toronto and Halifax are both debating parking and... Halifax might be having a better day.
"I just can't imagine current requirements being adequate," says Cheng of visitor parking. She rejects the idea that the "market" should decide the amount of visitor parking in a new building, because people buying units just assume parking will be available and don't think about it before they buy.

I desperately want to live in a city that is actively bettering itself – it's what drew me back to Halifax. However, we are quickly regressing under amateurish provincial leaders and their "vacuous and controllable" mayor. I don't think continued population growth is assured.
It seems like we had a brief period in Halifax when the constant talk of outward migration of young people stopped, but it seems like we’ve returned to the baseline I remember from childhood.
