Social Security got hit with more body blows this week: its commissioner is moonlighting as the made-up "CEO" of the IRS, and 750,000 applicants could be denied disability benefits. More from Bob Kuttner:

The campaign against “antifa” is about establishing a beachhead for further attacks on speech and assembly rights. We see that today in the effort to preemptively label No Kings protesters as “terrorists.”

Republicans control all three branches in DC.

If they wanted to fund the government, they would.

They can end this at any time.

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

ICE official testifies that DHS “prematurely” sent Abrego Garcia a notice that he would be removed to Ghana.

Just this morning, Ghana’s foreign minister wrote on X that the country had “directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities” that Abrego cannot be deported there.

Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia.
He cannot be deported to Ghana.
This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities.
In my interactions with US officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles would not be expanded.
Ghana strongly objects to these misleading media reports.

Speaker Mike Johnson just extended the House recess through next week, which means members of Congress will keep getting paid for doing nothing while essential staff like members of the military will work without getting paychecks during the shutdown.
That's Republican leadership.

this is a recipe for a four year government shutdown

you simply cannot make deals with people who are telling you up front they are going to break those deals and claw back everything you won in them

Q: Rescission are something Dems have said is a reason for a lack of trust. What rescissions are you discussing?

JOHNSON: We have more than $37t in debt. We're doing everything we can to get us back to sound fiscal responsibility. What does that include? A rescission package is part of our process

Farm bankruptcies are back in the news, so it's time to pull this chart out again.

Hey look they kept rising during Trump's first term. Then they went way down under Biden.

Now they're up again? So weird. Thanks Farm Bureau for the graphic
Screenshot from Farm Bureau article on farm bankruptcies. It shows farm bankruptcies climbing steadily 2014-2020, falling by half in 2021, & continuing to fall through 2023.

EXCLUSIVE — DHS Acting General Counsel sent out a memo Wednesday to all Federal Protective Service staff (the sub-agency that guards federal buildings) letting officers know they could take any action necessary "in the vicinity" federal property to protect themselves.

The Handbasket reports:
DHS top lawyer says 'no legal barrier' to actions officers can take to defend federal property
In a memo obtained exclusively by The Handbasket, Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers were given free rein.

We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly

Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy.

When I saw this headline, my first thought was, I'll bet dollars to donuts that this is Universal Health Services. And it is.

UHS owns hundreds of for-profit behavioral health hospitals, most of which deliver substandard care, and many under DOJ investigation for fraud and patient abuse.

It's so bad over at NYT Opinion.

Soltis Anderson is a Repub operative. Nate Silver is... well, Nate Silver, a gambling-addled reactionary centrist who has been a bad pundit (if a decent data person) his whole career. And Marc Rowan profits from destroying universities.

This is misinformation.

New in PN: The impossibly dumb reason for Trump's invasion of Portland

"Trump’s confusion isn’t just darkly comical (and a troubling reminder of the president’s growing senility) — it’s a stark illustration of the whiplash-inducing disconnect between his rhetoric and the reality on the ground."
