In 1916, cartoonist Rube Goldberg nailed it.
Destructive jerks get space in our faces just because somebody thinks they have money. It's the ultimate punchline of the DFT years: They thought he had money.
A millionaire, about to step into his limousine, turns to a waiting group of reporters and says "The war is awful."

"That's the most startling remark made since another noted millionaire said 'It looks like rain,'" says one alert newshound.

"He probably is in close touch with all the monarchs of Europe."

"Rush down to the paper and tell the editor to get out a special edition."

Reporters crowd around, photographers stand on each other's shoulders to get a picture.

Caption: When a famous person mumbles something foolish, he is quoted all over the world.

My child Firas and I are living under harsh conditions that weigh us down more with each passing day. We are exhausted and out of options, and each day feels harder than the one before. Any help, no matter how small, could make a big difference in our lives.😊🙏🙏

Another reason to mask at protests, aside from COVID safety and protection from doxxing, is that a lot of responsible documenters don't want to publish protesters' faces (esp without their consent) right now. Your face being in a shot may prevent people from sharing a worthwhile image publicly.

To avoid any engagement with federal law enforcement on October 18, No Kings protestors should dress as the Epstein files.

Carney on three new measures that will be in Budget 2025: "First, we're launching automatic federal benefits to help our most vulnerable get the money that they're entitled to. Secondly, we're making the National School Food Program permanent. And thirdly, we're renewing the Canada Strong Pass."

this is a recipe for a four year government shutdown

you simply cannot make deals with people who are telling you up front they are going to break those deals and claw back everything you won in them

Q: Rescission are something Dems have said is a reason for a lack of trust. What rescissions are you discussing?

JOHNSON: We have more than $37t in debt. We're doing everything we can to get us back to sound fiscal responsibility. What does that include? A rescission package is part of our process

“we are telling you right now that we do not intend to honor anything we agree to” is certainly a negotiating position one can take

Seeing pictures of an abandoned tamale cart in Pilsen where ICE took a tamale street vendor. Those photos of left behind carts are so haunting. Community members disappeared. Not just vendors but people who have long standing relationships with the community and people.

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

I'll say it again. The media continues to insist that Vought is laying people off because of the shutdown. Did the DOGE firings happen during a shutdown? No, they just did it.

He was always going to do mass firings. See Project 2025. They're just being cute thinking they can blame the Dems.

Instead of lowering health care costs and reopening the government, Senate Republicans are trying to strip away access to abortion.

That's two Chicago journalists feds have arrested (that I know of) in the last few weeks.

We're less than 24 hours out from federal judge Sara Ellis entering a restraining order that was supposed to protect journalists, among others, from abuse by federal agents.

I'm at the scene where ICE abducted multiple people from Lincoln and Foster this morning.

A WGN producer was among the people taken, allegedly because she was among a group of bystanders who tried to intervene. ICE agents hit this car while making their getaway.

The No Kings rallies have been peaceful. But when was there ever a protest with violence in Washington, DC? I'm racking my brain on that one....Oh yeah, when YOUR people showed up to overturn an election, beat up cops, and threatened Dem. and Repub. legislators. Trump pardoned all those thugs.

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

On the 18th we need to be vigilant for increased violence and provocation by both law enforcement and counter-protestors, both of which will be used to try to justify more violence and authoritarianism.

Looked to me when I got the new computer that anything on my desktop was being hosted in the One cloud. That's why my desktop is utterly clean now save for a couple of aliases. You really have to go the long way to avoid their crap.
