💛 L2 translators continue to remind the world that the concept of a mother tongue is, in fact, not so straightforward in large parts of the world, and that many of us translate into a language that is not our first!

As someone who immigrated to Ohio as a disoriented teen with zero English, appearing in @kenyonreview.bsky.social years later, with one of my most personal translations means a little extra. Maybe I did learn to string English words together into meanings, after all. kenyonreview.org/piece/she-be...

Karen Attiah writes here that the Washington Post fired her as a columnist (she was the last full-time Black opinion columnist, she points out) over a post that quoted Charlie Kirk: karenattiah.substack.com/p/the-washin...

I can't wait for you to read Hanna's brilliant lesbian thriller--taut and autumnal where her ANTIQUITY is lush and summery, richly intertextual, about desire and belonging and also sort of obliquely about translation... BODY DOUBLE is out in April!

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

You can search here to see if your book was copied: www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

And translators, make sure to search for your authors and not just your own name--your name might not bring up all your books.

AI is being used to justify firing workers at major tech companies, leaving those that remain to pick up the pieces.

AI code is being shoveled into crucial Google products, replacing trainers at TikTok, and worse.

This, in tech workers' own words, is how AI is killing jobs in Silicon Valley.
AI Killed My Job: Tech workers
Tech workers at TikTok, Google, and across the industry share stories about how AI is changing, ruining, or replacing their jobs.

I won’t be able to write from the grave
so let me tell you what I love:
oil, vinegar, salt, lettuce, brown bread, butter,
cheese and wine, a windy day, a fireplace,
the children nearby, poems and songs,
a friend sleeping in my bed—
and the short northern nights.

RIP to a true north.

another solidarity drop-in coming up with the Translators Organizing Committee! Join us 🏃‍♂️
nwu.org
Hey, translators! NWU's Translators Organizing Committee is hosting another solidarity drop-in on June 11, 7:30pm ET. Email them at [email protected] to reserve your spot!
Image reads: "The Translators Organizing Committee (TOC) is hosting their next solidarity drop-in session! Where: Zoom, When: Wednesday, April 9, 7:30-8:45pm ET, Email us to reserve your spot! translators@nwu.org"

To the right of the text is an image of a keyboard with a drawn image beneath of two people talking with a translation image in a speech bubble above them. Image reads: "We're doing this because... We believe our power is stronger as a collective than it is as individuals. You don't have to join NWU to attend the drop-ins, but we hope you will, and are happy to talk to you about why we think the union is the future. The more of us who join, alongside other writers, editors, and media creatives, the greater our chances of winning the working conditions we want and deserve!"
