Joined with the mass influx, but for slightly different reasons. I left Xhitter many months ago when the anti-Semitism went public; joined after 11/5 in need of better communication lines. Economic justice, science fiction, community, books.

Daily post for #blackhistorymonth, because the U.S. govt is refusing to recognize it! I don't believe Black people should have to carry the ball. February 1 and 2 posts are in a single thread below; each following day will have its own thread. Contributions welcome (especially from white people).

So proud to be working on this project ...

The clear story in Immigration this week is the escalation of—and pushback against—the Trump administration’s militarized raids and warrantless stops in Democrat-run major cities. We’ve updated our timeline with a lot of events in this zone:

How the administration is breaking the government, and what that means for all of us.

I got it from their email newsletter. There may not be a link yet.

And agreed. I wish I had put their name first also.

Thanks for the MUCH better reframing of this action alert!

In 2 days, right-wing election groups have submitted over 200,000 new comments to the Election Assistance Commission to require Americans to show a passport or citizenship document for voter registration. We must drive comments to oppose this before 10/20.

You see the exact same phenomenon in obesity research. Study after study shows no ill effects, or benefits, to all different sizes, but the conclusion is always “everybody should lose well gut.” Writer Lynne Murray taught me to call this “the faith sentence.”

Read all of popehat’s posts to the thread. Lots of the comments are funny/on target as well.

OK. It's going to be coming out soon because of the relentless investigations of Pam Bondi and Kash Patel, so I might as well admit it before the news breaks:

I am the General Counsel of Antifa.

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important

⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

"It's hard not to be political right now with a Hispanic name." He chuckled, "Well, this firm seems to have sent a lot of people to the administration of a particular person." His son's first day was great, everyone was friendly and respectful, the work is interesting, and they provide free food.
kith51.bsky.social
We chatted about it a little. Today, he called back to reschedule an appointment. I asked him how the first day went. He said, "I was nervous. I did a lot of research about the firm. I'm not a political person ..." I intervened with ...

Today's quick note about our complicated world.

I called my plumbers yesterday about a small issue. The firm is Jamaican-owned and almost entirely Latino-staffed. The Latino dispatcher told me how excited he was that his son had just started an IT internship with a major big-city law firm.

I spent the week at the police surveillance convention and let me tell you my biggest observation: The name of the game now is consolidating as much information as humanely possible from surveillance devices, the internet, other governmental data, and literally a million other places. 🧵

Really cannot scream loudly enough that for the next while you will feel an urge to hunker and turn inward and that is the last fucking thing we need everyone to do. Now is the time to have weird casual conversations with neighbors and friends about emergencies and to offer what help you can.

In the last 6 hours, Trump has imposed:

- A 100% tariff on medicine unless its producer starts building a new U.S. factory in the next 5 days
- A 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities
- A 30% tariff on upholstered furniture
- A 25% tariff on “Heavy (Big!) Trucks”

I think I got the name of one of them when she was using her city employee clout with the police. Tomorrow, she'll get Good Samaritan flowers.

Angry people are just life in the city. That level of kindness and protectiveness is something else altogether. This post is a celebration of the protectors.
kith51.bsky.social
One of them called police non-emergency. They made sure she didn't get on my bus. I was actually not afraid of Ms Angry--in fact, I agreed with almost everything she said except when she was calling me names. But they were kind, persistent, and absolutely committed to my safety.
kith51.bsky.social
They insisted on walking me to the bus, which was more than a block further away than their car. They convinced a Black man doing janitorial sidewalk work to walk with us. I kept telling them I was okay alone, and they would have none of it. They stayed with me at the bus stop.
kith51.bsky.social
She also had plenty to say about rich Jews having the nerve to ask the city for more money, and plenty of names to call me. As I got to the corner, my friend went the other way to her car, and two Black women leaving their City jobs came up and joined me. They stepped between me and Ms. Angry ...
kith51.bsky.social
I said I thought it was "peculiar," and the word completely set her off, from generally angry to viciously insulting. She had a lot to say about rich Jews, genocide, money for bombs, death of children, deportation of many groups, and "suicides" of Black men hanging in trees.
kith51.bsky.social
I told her who, and also answered what it was about. She asked if I was Jewish (yes) and asked my companion where she was from (India, by ethnicity). She asked us if we thought it was funny that the government wasn't deporting Jews and Indians. I said I didn't think _any_ of it was funny.
kith51.bsky.social
We huddled for a little while to debrief and she came up near us and continued her oration. We broke up our conversation and wandered off in different directions; I was with the other woman in our group. Ms. Angry followed us and pushed us to engage with her. She asked who we'd been meeting with.
