As of 5 days ago, there were at least 50 open leadership positions in NWS offices, not to mention the vacancies in forecasters, electronics technicians, and other support staff.
This reduces the capacity for outreach, increases forecaster fatigue, and limits the effectiveness of the NWS.

Just in: Additional losses due to early resignations & retirements are 870 NOAA wide & 200 NWS. It is crucial to understand these positions will NOT be back filled for the foreseeable future. NOAA’s mission (operations & research) supports both public safety and the economy. God help us. 🙏
Let’s recap: Over the last two months, hundreds of probationary NOAA employees were fired, then un-fired and immediately placed on administrative leave, then fired again. This is not a way to build a sustainable workforce, nor maintain morale within the existing one. The cruelty is the point.

Napkin math says there are 7 days in a week and weather is 24/7....so 7 meteorologists = not a lot of staff
Scooplet: The NWS office in Boston is now down to just seven meteorologists, four fewer than are needed to run it around the clock with even minimal staffing.
These seven meteorologists will now need to perform the duties of multiple staff members at once.

Everyone is worse off with a reduced NOAA workforce. EVERYONE.
We literally make daily decisions due to expected weather conditions like grabbing an umbrella or securing furniture ahead of strong winds.
And anyone can access that information because it's already covered by taxpayer dollars.

being a STEM student and watching your friends and mentors worry about their jobs is something no one prepares you for. the constant fear of "will i have a job after graduation?" is a deep concern. PLEASE call your representatives and inform them of the importance of NOAA/NWS and science in general!

“On top of that, the Trump administration is expected to cancel contracts of workers affiliated with NOAA, which could cost the agency as many as 2,500 personnel.”
This is now a terrible reality. Hundreds of workers at NOAA were now just dismissed earlier today, and they’re coming for more. This job is a dream job for most, including myself. At a time where life-saving NOAA programs are needed most, this is what our administration does - with no remorse.

The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach.

My heart breaks for those NWS/NOAA employees who are being let go today. National Weather Service is already incredibly understaffed and every meteorologist is critical and essential. This will undoubtedly cost lives as severe weather and hurricane season ramps up.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.
