Eno rolled down his window.
“IDs, boys.”
We both dug in our pockets for the squares of rigid plastic that contained stolen profiles. I held my breath as I held it high for the guard to scan.
“What’s up with you?” he said.
“Me? Blind.”
He grunted. “You know, I always wondered. Why bother with the wraps an’ dark glasses an’ all if you can’t see nothing?”
“It’s for your benefit, not mine. Freaks people out to see the scars.”
He gave a long, “ohhh” of understanding. “Sorry you won’t get to enjoy the dancers while you’re here. Welcome to Sector Two.” He’d already turned for the next vehicle.
I was surprised with how easily that lie had come out of my mouth. Wes would have been proud.

My progress so far! When I was first setting my goals for #RAWR, I started with 25k for this month. I've had a lot going on and didn't know if I was up for another 50k month. But I've been having a great time and so I upped my goal to 75k across two months. :D

Iggy filled every moment with words and never seemed to run out of breath. Even through the introductions and him absorbing who I really was, there was never a pause in his speech.
“So, we’re thinking of running a McLeary,” Eno said, directing Iggy’s attention back to the matter at hand.
Iggy seemed happy to chat about whatever topic Eno wanted to talk about. “I’m in, I’m in. What’s the loot? We getting some priestly treasure or a holy artifact? I’ve always wanted to do something like that. Nab a mystical box that’s got mysterious power if you open it. Something like that. Like in those old heist stories with the ancient temples, you know. They’re always set in jungles though. We ain’t got any jungles around no more. You seen any of those video stories?”
I chose to respond to his first question only. “We’re getting my brother.”

“Pols, it’s freezing down here,” Rhaz said when we reached the bottom.
“There’s another huge door here. There’s a button on the side to open it. Looks like it slides out of the way.”
“There can’t be power out here, right?” I asked.
“No, but I can probably short it out,” Wes said. “Eno, you got that battery pack with you?”
“Yeah, but it’s for our comms and—”
“Do you want to go in or not?” Wes asked. He was already poking around, tinkering with the control panel on the wall. With a pop, he had the plastic plate off. “Ah, easy. I wish wiring diagrams were still this simple.”

“What does it look like?” I asked, trying to keep the irritation from my voice.
“A creepy sex dungeon.”
Wes scoffed and Eno laughed. “She’s not wrong.”
I could hear Wes rolling his eyes when he explained. “There’s a low chair in the middle of a big open room. For the prophets. This is the cloister, where they went to see visions.”
“What’s the weird chair for?” asked Rhaz indignantly.
“You’ve seen me collapse onto the floor at least twice,” I reminded her.
Rhaz gave a drawn out, “Oh, right.”

“You do look a lot like Silvan.”
How could she tell? She’d only ever seen the bottom half of our faces.
I kept my derision internal. Dad had made sure I knew not to talk back to the Merx. He said, “You can take an attitude with me, Levi, but don’t you dare ever talk like that to the Merx. Do you understand? You do what they say, and you keep Wes safe.”

I told him to shove off, go to the theater for a video story with his friends. Go get laid. Something other than obsess about everything that had gone wrong.
That’s what I was trying to do. Fully devoting my mind to my duties to the congregation meant that it wasn’t wandering to the things I didn’t want to think about. If I wasn’t working, I was running on the treadmill until I was too tired to think. I didn’t think about my dad being found in an alleyway on the other side of the city. I didn’t dream about his murder. I couldn’t miss him if I were working. And I definitely didn’t see the vision of blood and gore in the cathedral every time I closed my eyes.

“The amount of tacked on, irrelevant nonsense at the end of this bill is shameful. You all should be embarrassed. I’ll never support this monstrosity,” says the man at the podium.
“You will if you know what’s good for you!” says someone from the congregation—er, parliament.
“The entire city relies on this damned machine. We need the Merx to work more diligently on trying to understand if we can replicate it. Build a second one for Polea’s sake! We shouldn’t be passing bullshit like this. If the maintenance is so pricey, we’d be better off putting that money into research.”
They’re talking about the water purifier. The Merx have an elaborate system of pipes, valves, pumps, and storage tanks, all designed to funnel the poisoned rainwater into the purifier machine, which supplies the whole city with clean water. I don’t understand what they mean by research, though. We know exactly how the machine works—it runs on manna, a gift from the goddess. It runs on divine power. There’s no use researching it.
“All their top engineers have been trying for decades—hell, centuries—to duplicate it. Preserving this machine is the best we can do.”
The gavel cracks the air to keep people from shouting over each other.

“Why haven’t you used the credits yet?”
Eno said, “I don’t want this traced back to me or anyone here. I don’t want them to see a bunch of transfers to Eno, Iggy, Kile, Lune—people who all happen to be patrons of the same dive—then put two and two together and come after us. See what I mean? So I had this idea. What if we did it randomly? Distribute the credits to folks in Sector Three, ya know? It’s not a huge fortune. But it could make a difference to a lot of people.”
“If you can get me a stable terminal, I can write a script to randomly select people based on whatever parameters you want and make the transfers. That’s the easy part,” Wes said. “The hard part will be the security flags all those transfers throw up. I’ll need to hunt down his auth codes. They’ll be on the credit database somewhere, but I’ll need to decrypt them. Or, better yet, if I had higher-level security access to the credit database his accounts are stored in, I could bypass the auth codes completely.”
“You’re speaking a language I don’t understand, and I like it,” said Eno.
