Do you have any idea how mad a midwest catholic has to be before they start talking like this?

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

This is a little performative for most Protestants and it is Extremely Not for most Catholics.

Some clergy are begging to be allowed closer to the detention center to perform communion.

"You are preventing our religious freedom," someone in the crowd shouts.

Rome might not use those words but Rome has thrown open the door to them being used, and clearly backs them. Think about that.

One thing the Catholic Church has in abundance is a flair for theatrical presentation.

One does not simply -turn away- a Procession.
I've been a lapsed Catholic for twenty years and I flinched at that thought.
The presence and solemnity and dignity can be important even for Non-Catholics that witness or take part in it.
Good on this congregation.
Have mercy on their souls indeed.

The church I grew up in was named after St Clare. One of the stories around her was that her convent was about to be attacked so she grabbed a monstrance and held it overhead on the roof for a very long time and the army retreated. This is why she's usually depicted holding one.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

If Portland’s blow up animals are the right language for Portland, this is the right language for Chicago.

Look, this is what Catholicism does so well. Yes girl, BRING OUT THE MONSTRANCE. MAKE THEM SAY IT IN FRONT OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. Martin Luther could *never*. He failed to predict the Trump Presidency and also is directly implecated. I am so serious.

What the priest did was to carry an artifact that is, in Cath tradition, the ACTUAL PRESENCE OF JESUS THAT CONSACRATES A TEMPLE, to the detainment center.

Guys, what happened is that ICE turned *actual Jesus* away from its doors, from the Catholic perspective.

fr. Larry you're a genius.

Denying priests access to the imprisoned and thus denying people communion and other sacraments? Inexcusable and monstrous.

i love that 17th century jewish poltergeist story where the family living in the haunted house calls a catholic priest for help before they contact a rabbi, because yeah, i think that would be my call too; id be like, oh? a demon in my house speaking latin and drawing inverted crosses on my wall in sulfuric bile? then without even questioning my faith i'd call up the catholic church and be like yo father, one of your boys loose come get him

Im still wondering what goes through the mind of someone who joined ICE just for the benefits when they're told to rip a mother away from her screaming children or to kidnap a child from school...

The internet has been a huge chunk of my life since I was 12 years old. It's where my best friends and my career lives.

I can't just not be on the internet, but so much joy has been sucked from it.

I hate having to scrutinize every video, every image, every piece of text to see if it's AI slop.

Real talk: Not teaching basic, age-appropriate sex ed is negligence.

People who’d call it grooming should have their hard drives checked.

As for LGBTQ+, anti-egalitarian rhetoric and policies have zero place in the public sphere. Thinking otherwise should be seen as deeply weird and disqualifying.

Sex ed for young children focuses on teaching kids what touching is inappropriate and what to do about it, which *fights* child sex abuse. LGBTQ+ inclusion fights bullying.

These bigots call it "grooming" to teach kids to not bully and to report sexual abuse.

That's what's really sick.

One of the nastiest things from these nasty pieces of work has been the lie that kidlit creatives, teachers & librarians are somehow grooming kids.

Statistically, a parent, guardian, or other relative is more likely to be the perpetrator: www.nationalchildrensalliance.org/media-room/n...

I see the light in our teacher candidates' eyes when they speak about working with young people.

We are light workers. I don't want that light hidden under a proverbial bushel. I want it to shine. God knows we need all the candles we can get in these bleak times.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.
