PUTIN BLAMES EUROPE FOR PROPOSAL MODIFICATIONS

What he’s saying is that America is ready to give him what he wants but Europe - you know the place this war is taking place and threatens its existence at an existential level - along with Ukraine itself, the defender of the west!

Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving.
Can’t decide who this is worse for, the EU or the UK. But the real looser, of course, is European defence. So all of us.

Hegseth & his henchmen seem to regard this as a videogame where they get points for each target they hit. These aren't human beings to them.

(Not to mention we aren't even in an armed conflict. We're just killing people in international waters. Just so many layers of horrifying wrongness.)

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

BELGIUM BLOCKS UKRAINE FINANCIAL AID UNTIL IT GETS EU SUPPORT

€140 billion sits in Euroclear, frozen assets that Russia was about to repatriate when the war began.
The EU wants to use the money to plug the rapidly expanding Ukrainian deficit for 2025/6, running at around €60

They believe that Trump will use the formal powers of the government and whatever informal powers he may have to extract costs from them if they do not play ball and they equally believe that the anti-Trump coalition will not extract these costs.

So we need to extract those costs.
given how unpopular Trump is, it’s insane that civil society/universities/law firms are still asking themselves “how do I stay on Trump’s good side” rather than “how do I avoid facing consequences for complying with Trump’s illegal demands”
New Gallup poll shows Trump's approval hit a new low for his second term:
-36% approve
-60% disapprove

His approval among Republicans went from 91% in January to 84% in November

And why should we be worried? 🧵

Being among the first interrogated and ultimately fired by DOGE, I certainly felt we were facing the business end of a right-wing conspiracy theory 🧵
DOGE was not a money-saving effort. It was an effort to chase down and prove right-wing conspiracy theories. They went after USAID to prove conspiracy theories about foreign aid. Then they went after SSA to, again, pursue conspiracy theories about Dems paying "illegals" to vote. 1/2
All DOGE accomplished was purging critical government staff, handing private data to outsiders, and sentencing thousands in developing countries to death by gutting USAID.

I don’t say this lightly: if there were any justice in this world, the people responsible for this devastation would be in jail

Somehow I am reminded of this famous quote by Samuel Johnson: "being in a ship is like being in jail with the chance of drowning. "
Except it’s not true that flying is dehumanizing. Even on small regional airlines in coach. It’s a period of involuntary confinement. It can’t be helped because you can’t sit up front and fly the plane. My God, stop complaining about a miracle.
Two things can be true - air travel is a completely dehumanizing experience and people should respect themselves and others in public.

The question I get asked most often is how to understand Trump's push-me-pull-me Ukraine policy. To me there are a few constants that don't change:
1) He really wants to end the war fast. Results over process.
2) He respects Putin and wants a good relationship with Russia. 👉

In March of 1945, the US Army issued this "fact sheet" to guide conversations with soldiers on the topic of fascism, paying particular attention to the ongoing threat that domestic fascist movements posed to the US. Their analysis of what a homegrown US fascism would look like is interesting.

My mistake has been trying to explain what "fascism" is to people who don't care what it is.

So I'm going to try something else. Let's do this as a practical thought exercise.

If America *were* fascist *today* - what would you have to do differently in your daily life? /1
