Thwarted Madcap Heiress. Free-range book festival programmer, editor, writer, interviewer, reviewer, prize judge. On board to programme Wigtown Book Festival 2026.
Been told I did a relaxed, elegant interview tonight. Not sure what a frenzied interview would be but I am happy to accept the compliment.

Walked past a glorious display of coloured markers in Ryman’s window and will now be using the adjective “temptational” from here on in.

🕊️My cousin hosts a morning touch football game every Thanksgiving. The invitation to it includes the usual bits (time, place, etc), but also this kind and wry reminder:

“This is a family friendly event. Kids 12 and under must get the ball once every 4 downs. Try not to steamroll anyone over 30.”

Strictly speaking a slab block, rather than a tower, but here's the skinny on Westfield Court nevertheless. An unusual building for Edinburgh, both architecturally and historically: the first municipal, high-rise, modern flats but a bit of an evolutionary dead end threadinburgh.scot/2023/04/23/9...

Off to @mainstreethare.bsky.social this evening to talk to the always-interesting Sally Magnusson about her new novel, The Shapeshifter's Daughter, a retelling of the Norse myths around Hel, who, IMO, got a raw deal from Odin.

'What if the protagonist of a novel was not a single person but a couple?'

A gay working-class couple of genius artists (who also happen to be Very Handsome).

Grateful to Lara Feigel for this thoughtful review of the Two Roberts.

After nearly 28 years, I'd become used to forgetting about it, but for reasons most mysterious (to me, at any rate), I'm thinking about Thanksgiving this year and how I don't have it anymore. (I have thanks, always, but not the whole routine.) BRAINS ARE WEIRD. EMOTIONS DON'T OBEY RULES.

Impossible how good reading is. You mean I just point my face at the paper for a bit and it does a whole update on my brain?

Highly recommend dashing from Sciennes to Bruntsfield (and back) to deliver a biological sample to one's surgery as a great way to get in some morning exercise.

Other options are available.

This is what the Thursday Murder Club film could have been, done properly. Not saying it's perfection, but it's got a lot going on, few young actors (tho they, too, are excellent), and a lot of lived-in faces.
Wanting something light, I tuned into The Green Glove Gang on Netflix. Never seen Polish television before. It's diverting, if a bit silly, and boasts one of the most beautiful buildings (and set of windows) AND a raft of superb older actors with their original faces.
