RIP Syril Karn. You were a good deputy inspector and we'll miss your wacky hijinks, incredible outfits, and enigmatic yet revealing expressions.

I am deeply in love with the Aubreyad and it's richly populated with characters of the sort you describe, but I am morally convinced that guy is a reference to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Thrawn is Rommel (laudatory) vs Thrawn is Rommel (derogatory)
ironic that the progression of Thrawn goes in exactly the opposite direction as the historiography of Rommel over time though

Could you suggest anything for post-college learners? I never took Latin but would like to have a better grasp of the language

Whole bunch of cops sitting around in parked cars rn at Dupont Circle. Is this a particularly unsafe area requiring a heavy police presence? Not from what I can see. What’s going on, MPD?

gotta say, as a dedicated UCCer it is *wild* to read what other people think Calvinism is because that just does not gel with my experience at all

It’s the 20th Massachusetts.

Oliver Wendell Holmes. Paul J. Revere. The Hallowell brothers. Two future commanders of USCT regiments. Every major battle except First Bull Run.

The first episode is them all enlisting a la All Quiet. Then news of First Bull Run comes and the realities of war hit.

Iirc they actually just were supposed to be normal 76mm gun tanks, Oddball’s crews had just put extra lengths of pipe on the muzzles to make them look like 90mm guns

Oh nice, never read them but I hope you enjoy

my proudest Bit is an early modern world that just overthrew its king and is busily reenacting the worst excesses of the Reign of Terror in internecine struggle but is also terrified of an Imperial intervention and so everyone is absurdly motivated to Not Fuck With The Tithe of guard regiments

I use BlackICE because I like ridiculously overcomplicating the game, particularly knowing that my various destroyer classes are marginally distinct from each other statwise

I do this but with the US in HoI4; spend the entire early game building up a perfectly accurate OOB across all three services, get to Pearl Harbor, lose interest two months into the war, and go play a different game

made a couple lame jokes last year about following two generations of family tradition (WWI and II) after the AfD made some slight gains. I never thought I'd be called upon to follow in their footsteps at home instead, and in those of a Civil War vet ancestor too.

To your point though a lot of officers during and after the war felt those trimmed-down organizations lacked sufficient staying power in combat and relied on attachments to an excessive degree

I mean tbf this was a huge cause celebre for McNair and Army Ground Forces, they cut personnel they saw as extraneous to the unit’s mission ruthlessly during T/O&E revisions in 1942-43

I consider those scenes to be basically canon; hopefully we might get to see them in a FACPOV: Andor book someday

[Scene: two red-robed Imperial Royal Guards are posted outside a door. The muffles sound of Force Lightning, followed by the Emperor screaming as he falls, can be heard.]

GUARD 1: ...should we investigate?

GUARD 2: Should you shut the fuck up before you get us both killed?
