New: What I wish I was taught in school as a disabled person.

I’ve taken to the blog to add some important lessons to the curriculum. Here’s my timetable which would include independent living skills, disability advocacy, and so much more. lifeofablindgirl.com/2025/09/21/w...
What I wish I was taught in school as a disabled person - Life of a Blind Girl
There are many things I wish I’d learned during my time in education that weren’t on the curriculum. Since I can’t turn back the clock, I’m sharing them on the blog instead.

£274bn is the spending power of disabled people in the UK.

The difference between accommodations for disabled people and non disabled people is ableism.

At #AccessGiven25 inaugural conference in Newcastle.

First new thing for me is audio descriptions of yourself (gender, race / colouring, hair style and clothes!)

Up first, @lifeofablindgirl.bsky.social and Helen Dutson.

“We want you here too.” 🖤
Meaning, accessibility efforts are a love note.

Calling disabled people ‘brave’ or ‘inspirational’ for going about their everyday lives isn’t the compliment you think it is.

I really just go around telling people "I'm just a little under the weather today" as if there has been a day in the last 15 years where I've been over it.

Reminder to social media managers: accessible social media content isn’t a nice to have, it’s a necessity.
Please prioritise accessibility so that everyone can access the content you’re sharing and join in on the conversation.

Although last night’s defeat hurts, ITV’s offering of audio descriptive commentary for blind and visually impaired fans felt like a big win for accessibility of the women’s game. As a blind fan, having every single visual detail relayed back to me audibly was the best result. #WEuro2025

Happy #DisabilityPrideMonth! I’m proud to be disabled. And I’m proud to be claiming my space in a world where I don’t fit the mould.

Did you know Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images?

Global Accessibility Awareness Day is a great day to help you get that set up.

Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting."

Access is a right, not a luxury.

This #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay, we’re calling on everyone — from government to social media managers — to take responsibility for the barriers they create.

Read the open letters below.

✉️Who would you write to?
#GAAD
A typed letter taped to a blue background. It reads:

"Dear Employer,

Flexible hours, remote work, and reasonable adjustments aren’t perks — they’re essential for removing the barriers disabled people face in the workplace.

If you want our talent, invest in our access.

Sincerely,
A disabled job seeker."

An envelope icon is in the bottom right corner, and the hashtag #GAAD is below the letter. The Disability Wales logo is in the top right corner. A typed letter taped to a blue background. It reads:

“Dear Local Authority,
You said your new centre is ‘accessible.’
Then you built it with heavy doors, fluorescent lights, and just one Blue Badge parking space.
Compliance isn’t the same as usability.
Respectfully,
Someone who still can’t access your building.”

An envelope icon is in the bottom right corner, and the hashtag #GAAD is below the letter. The Disability Wales logo is in the top right corner. A typed letter taped to a blue background. It reads:

"Dear Social Media Manager,

You wrote a great post — then published it as an image with no alt text.

To me, that’s a blank screen.

Words matter. So does access.

Yours accessibly,
A screen reader user."

An envelope icon is in the bottom right corner, and the hashtag #GAAD is below the letter. The Disability Wales logo is in the top right corner. A typed letter taped to a blue background. It reads:

"Dear UK Government,

Slashing vital disability benefits whilst ignoring the everyday barriers we face is not a route to work — it’s a road to ruin.

Until those barriers are removed, these cuts will only deepen poverty and inequality.

Firmly,
Disabled people in Wales."

Not only did I attend the 7 goal thriller between Arsenal and Manchester United over the weekend, I was also provided with the most amazing audio descriptive commentary.

You can read about my experience of attending the match in my new blog post. #BarclaysWSL lifeofablindgirl.com/2025/05/12/w...

Sometimes I see something which makes me feel like we’re taking huge strides in making the world more accessible.

Then something else happens which makes me feel like we’ve taken a step backwards.

Either way, the good fight continues 💪

Something that I love about the disabled community is how we always come together to support each other. Although things are terrible right now, we’re all there for one another 💛
