New paper! 🎉 Abandoned mines aren't just leaching trace metals, they're also releasing REEs with systematic diel cycling. Our wetland study revealed distinct light-driven patterns for different REEs. Understanding these processes matters for both ecological risk assessment & remediation planning. 🧪⚒️

USGS scientists tell us about the effects of invasive species & climate change. Yet their fate, like many other federal employees who work in science & the environment, is unknown. My latest for @nrdc.org. Thank you to @meadekrosby.bsky.social, John Organ, Ed Arnett, and others for speaking with me.

The federal government has censored the work of dozens of scientists, including work by my lab, on the impacts of climate change on Acadia National Park. Signs have been removed from Cadillac and Great Meadow. They’re also removing signs about the Wabanaki’s sacred connections to Cadillac.

It so was hard to imagine having successful career in science as a disabled PhD student that eventually I just left.

Who could have guessed that years later I would help create a magazine issue dedicated to highlighting Trailblazing disabled chemists!

It's more like, "We turned all of the houses into parking lots, so now there are fewer house fires!" Meanwhile the remaining houses are burning at an increasing rate.
limnologylauren.bsky.social
Meanwhile, fire risk in natural systems (western US, boreal forests) continues rising with warming (Abatzoglou & Williams 2016, PNAS). By presenting agricultural-driven global decline without context, the report is trying to mislead readers into thinking climate wildfire concerns are overblown. 😒
limnologylauren.bsky.social
The new DOE report tries to downplay wildfire as a climate concern by highlighting declining global fire trends. Yes, global burned area declined ~25% since 2001. But they completely omit WHY: agricultural expansion converting fire-prone savannas to farmland (Andela et al. 2017, Science). 🤔🧪
