As we all know the game industry is going through very turbulent times, unfortunately this has also affected several members of our collective. The silver lining is that one of the largest rooms in our coworking space in Berlin will be available from September 1st.

More info in thread...

GAME, the German game industry trade association, released this *damn* good statement on the unjust NSFW game takedowns

www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
The artistic freedom of game developers is fundamental to games as a cultural medium. Any restrictions improsed by payment service providers or games platforms must not exceed the legal limits.
In Germany, thanks in part to the USK, clear, binding and established rules apply that must be adhered to. Furthermore, creative forms of expressions or certain themes in games, such as diversity, must not be targeted by individual interests or campaigns from particularly vocal groups, as is currently observed on Steam or itch.io. The terms and conditions of global payment service providers such as Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal must not conflict with European values such as freedom of expression or artistic freedom.
We therefore call on the companies involved to design their rules and offerings in a manner that ensures complicance with applicable laws and prevents overblocking.

Signed,
Felix Falk,
Managing Director of GAME

Great analysis from Chris Zukowski on why you don't need a big following to market your indie game (or for it to sell well).

I do see and practice an alternative routes to survival for #indidevs

1. Micro-scale.
2. Foster a returning audience.
3. Through building a franchise that can exploit bundled sales, brand recognition etc.
4. Stick to your franchise,re-use, recycle and expand so you can:
5. Punch above your weight.
ramiismail.com
Viv is 100% correct here. Your options are always one of three:

1. Do not make an indie game.
2. Get funding, usually by making something that fits a very narrow and useless definition of "safe", and subsequently losing agency over your production reality.
3. Have another income or means.
doe-or-die.bsky.social
ok but for real if you want to make a really good indie (or AA) games the number one way is "be financially comfortable via other means"

blue prince guy owned a popular website generating income, toby fox was a successful musician...

frankly if we had a UBI youd get SO MANY GOOD GAMES

"to democratize art is not every person having a cute drawing made in seconds, to democratize art is every person having time and health to learn and make art if they chose to, and mainly to have the means to think and relate introspectively with art."
thebertoni.bsky.social

I’ve been pretty quiet on here lately but I'm happy to say that my game is coming along quite nicely!

I made good progress on some of the groundwork the past months - will be sharing WIPs real soon ✨ including some Houdini tooling as well... 😊🧡 (spoiler: APEX!)

Do you make weird, artsy, short-form videogames? Or know someone who does? Check out this new zine project I've been working on (intended to kind of bridge poetry/academia/art world/indie games) - and consider submitting a game for the first issue! www.gamepoems.org

I have shared this story, this thread, before - but I think given the state of the world, it's worth telling once again. Maybe it can help, especially if like me, you make art, and you wonder what the use of all of it is right now.

I'm half-Egyptian, a country with an infamous history of randomly disappearing political dissidents, artists, and influencers into infamous black sites and prisons, and I am telling you right now that what is happening in the US feels horrifyingly familiar. You should not go if you can avoid it.

Today my partner and I cancelled our GDC plans.

It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but between reduced air safety, increased border control detainments, and escalating tensions between the US and Canada, travelling to the US for a games conference (especially from Canada) doesn't seem worth it.

I'm not sure which of you need to hear this, but:

If you push yourself to your limits and burn out for a company, you are trading years of your future productivity for minor gains in the present.

Burning out will _fuck you up_, it's like brain fog or depression, and it takes years to recover
