The short version of my idea is this: I don't think prestige indie survives financially without a strong and influential games press. Games whose strength is their idea need people to go to bat for them, and sort of require the "gaming literati" we had in the 2010s to break even.

Tateishi: Yeah, my thoughts have changed since I met you and became more aware of how people felt. But even when I was at Konami, I didn’t even bother telling anyone I did Mega Man 2. So the fact you came all the way to Japan to tell me these things makes me very happy I worked on the game all those years ago.

I haven't attended since 2020, first because of covid, and now I am genuinely concerned that ICE might detain me because of my political views. I know it's a small chance, but why would I risk it? Especially with other events around the world being more affordable and just as valuable.
