One of my cards for Magic's upcoming Strixhaven set got spoiled early, so I get to show it off!

As you might imagine this was a real interesting assignment, with the brief full of infinity, fractals and spirals.
A digital painting of a pleasant park on Quandrix campus full of carefully maintained grass, water sculptures, tall trees and a physics defying reality shift causing the whole thing to spiral into infinite spiraling fractals and then maybe a few more loops for a good measure. In the foreground there are three figures, possibly two students and a professor. In the middle background there are three figures, possibly three students. In the further background there are three figures, possibly... A close up of the three foreground figures. The brief didn't say anything about who might be enjoying the scenery, so I in turn enjoyed picking a trio with very different profiles and designing their outfits in line with the Quandrix college dress style. A close up of the most prominent set of spirals because I wanted to show off the textures. A close up of the upper right area, 'cause this particular bunch of trees is my favorite. I spent a longer than necessary amount of time adding fun, flowing patterns to the lawns and walkways because it felt appropriate and made the colors more interesting.

A full squat is part of my range of motion tests for this portfolio character, so I figured they might as well have a barbell.

There was plenty of weight painting, a few fixes, and added bones, but now that I'm happy with joint deformation and range, it's time to dig into texturing!

A British Museum photo showing the reverse side of a silver stater coin from the ancient city of Eretria on the island of Euboea, Central Greece. The coin is roundish in shape, and in the centre there is a relief image of an octopus within a recessed square. The octopus has a bulbous head with a small round eye on either side. Beneath the head, eight arms curve gracefully, symmetrically arranged with four arms on each side, curling into a tight spiral at the tip. Diameter: 26 millimetres. Weight: 8.670 grammes. Dated circa 500-480 BC.

When Amazing Stories commissioned me to do the cover for the premier issue of their newly redesigned magazine, I decided that the painting should encompass both the realms of science fiction and fantasy. 1/3
