I'm thinking this one's vibes are the opening couple seconds of Nickelback's "Next Contestant" abruptly cut off by Faith Hill's "This Kiss"

A few moments into their journey along the stage, a guy with three inches and probably a hundred pounds on Gavin stumbled into them. She didn't even see him coming. One second, they were weaving through the crowd; the next, Vale was pinned against the stage looking up into the storm brewing on Gavin's face. He'd managed to turn and catch himself on the stage, preventing her from getting crushed, and he was seconds from starting a fight. “You okay?”

She could barely hear him between the speaker three feet to her left and the hammering of her heartbeat in her ears, but she nodded. This was her moment, she realized, and it was slipping away as Gavin turned to fight the guy who pushed the guy who bumped into them. Vale did something in that moment that she'd never done before - she reached out and took what she wanted by the lapels.

The spider I just evicted from my workplace was like 2 inches in diameter and I heard her body hit the ground when I dumped her outside.

If Vale was taken out of commission, Preston would become the Vox & he would leave Eli high and dry once it came out that Eli needs his help because he's wanted for murder. He's much more likely to use his Voxhood for his own personal gain than Vale is, which will eventually get him killed.

They all lie when they need or want to. The closest to a truthteller I have is Elizabean, who can only lie about things a normal dog would lie about, like who chewed up the phone book and who committed tax fraud.

Gavin to the rescue. Don't worry, Eli makes an effort to look less like he walked off the set of Bridgerton later. Unless you're into to that, in which case, don't worry everyone gets regency-ized MUCH later. #WIPSnips

Gavin stepped out, eyes hidden from the day behind a pair of aviators. “Hey,” he said smoothly, leaning his elbows on his car. “Heard you needed a ride.”

“Yeah, I, uh, wasn't feeling well earlier and Mr. Darcy here wanted to make sure I got home safely. To my house on the other side of town. Where I live.” She punctuated her explanation with a pleading look. “We should probably get going so you're not late to work, babe.”

“Right. Thanks for looking out for my… girlfriend?” he said uncertainly.

Vale started to climb into the car before realizing she still had the stranger's jacket. “Oops, almost stole this,” she said bashfully, pushing it into his hands. “Oh, and I'm gonna need my phone back, Mr. Darcy.” She held her hand out expectantly, smiling.

“My name's Ellil,” the stranger supplied before handing her phone back. “Thank you for letting me borrow your phone, miss.” He shrugged his jacket on as he spoke, completing the Pride and Prejudice look.

But they're also all dressing up as the pop culture versions of what they actually are - Gavin as the devil, Lukas as a Dracula, Emily as a *witch* witch, Sean as a wolfman. I think I originally had Vale slated as a witch, too, but she'll be ditching the pointy hat and leaning into the necromancy.

Vale hasn't really celebrated Halloween much beyond horror movie marathons since she was a kid. This year, however, she will be attending her aunt's wedding on Halloween as an official member of Gavin's band and they're all dressing up as different monsters -

There's also Lukas & Darien, which is very, "Here are my emotionally stunted men who are in love but both take forever to figure it out and then neither will say it first," though in Lukas's defense he once suggested Darien might be his boyfriend, got mildly corrected, and went back into his shell.

There's Vale (necromancer), Gavin (incubus), & Eli (wind demon). They're in a polyamorous relationship (that sort of extends to Eddie/Shadi via Gavin & Shamash via Eli & Vale has a couple things they don't care to participate in but give their blessing on). To me, it's about exploring new dynamics.

Long ago, in a galaxy far away space wizards built Etemenanki, the world anchor, & they sought to connect w/ new worlds. The Space Wizards suddenly disappeared and Etemenanki fell into ruin and the connection between worlds destabilized, resulting in the cyclical convergences Vox Mortis now has.

Valeris - I imagine all the nobles (Xy, Lys, Kian, Zareen) have been tutored in the use of at least one instrument but I haven't thought about it at all

Poss Crew - I think, at this point in the timeline, people who play real actualy instruments are few and far between for both humans and Verdurans, and Araquis is the only one who *might* have experience with it and if he does it's some kinda alien thing I haven't conceptualized yet.

I've probably posted this before, but it's always funny to me when Mr. Rockstar is thrown off his rhythm and the awkwardness comes out. #WIPSnips

A surge of girlish excitement bubbled up from her chest and she suddenly found it incredibly hard to contain herself. Desperate to keep her cool, she cleared her throat and said, “I mean, Eddie’s voice was amazing, but he was singing your songs. I’m a big fan.”

“Oh, shit!” Emily said, staring at Gavin analytically. “That's where I knew you from! You were on her ceiling, dude.” Vale turned a shade of red that would be considered “medically significant” when she died of embarrassment later after strangling Emily in her sleep. “Man, I am so glad I figured that out. It's been bothering me all year.” Emily's ghoulish smile suggested she already knew. She said something about grabbing drinks and walked off into the convenience store, oblivious to Vale's eyes boring into her back.

Left alone with her adolescent romantic fixation in the flesh, Vale looked anywhere but his face. “It was the only place in my room wide enough for the poster,” she lied. “It lived on my wall when I got my own place.”

“In your room?”

“Er, yeah,” she answered, a bit put off. She risked looking over at him. He looked a bit like he was in pain, like he had realized what he was saying only after it was too late.

“Lady Astrid, may I start by saying that hearing your voice again after one hundred long, lonely years is a panacea for the profound loneliness that has consumed me these past decades,” Darien said. “I wish that I could but gaze upon your heavenly visage and find fulfillment.”

Lukas could see her man bristling and he dug his elbow into Darien's ribs as subtly as vampirically possible. “Tone it down,” he hissed. “Her man's right there.”

Darien paused. “What man?” he whispered.

“She walked in here on a Greek god's arm and he looks like he's ready to rip your throat out,” Emily offered helpfully.

Lukas could smell stress rolling off Darien now. “Oh. We are so fucked.” Lady Astrid cleared her throat pointedly and Darien returned his attention to her. “My lady, please forgive me. I was unaware that you are accompanied on this day. Might I ask for an introduction?”

“Accompanying me today, every blissful day since our marriage last season, is my husband, Lord Victor,” she responded coldly. “Now, answer me, Dimyr. Did you illegally hunt a human in my realm?”

“No,” Darien said slowly. “I was attacked by a violent bigot who I subsequently outed as a murder and the father of one of his victims beat him nine tenths of the way to his grave. We were just making sure a valuable natural resource didn't go to waste.” It was bullshit, Lukas thought, but maybe it might sway her to let them go. “In any case, my companions were unaware of the law and I would ask that I alone be punished, my lady.”

Vale *currently* trusts Emily the most because Emily's the only one she knows well. Later, when the status quo's established, Gavin barely edges out Eli just because Eli's approach to protecting her has been to isolate himself, since some of the danger she gets into is because he's a fugitive.
