This is amazing! I love all the little details, the mirror, the detail on the windows. Wish I was brave enough to do a home reno myself 😅

I've recently thought if I could write SFF with the prose of Maggie O'Farrell I'd be pretty happy

SFF writers! What writer outside your genre was a big influence on your work?

Thank you! It's ironic that I'd literally just posted complaining about how hard writing was and then refreshed my feed to see my own book cover staring back at me 😅

"There Are Reasons for This is unmistakably a novel of our times. While that might sound depressing, thanks to Berndt’s vivid, unexpected writing and fully imagined misfits, her portrayal of what it’s like to have to keep on getting on with life while the world is ending is unexpectedly cathartic."

A simple but important way to support Palestinian writers is to read their work. A helpful list is in the link below but please do explore @arablit.bsky.social more widely as well as publishers like @commapress.bsky.social
arablit.bsky.social
This should not be limited to English. We've reached out to people who can help with lists of Palestinian lit in Turkish, Indonesian, Malayalam, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German. If you can help with these or other languages, please message.

I'm only a few chapters in but enjoying it so far! It was gifted to me after I'd really enjoyed the animated series Pantheon as apparently it works on similar themes. Will take my time with this one as it's such a long book but it reads surprisingly easily 🤓

This summer and September have so far been science/fiction flavoured 🌝

*note only one of these has been read to completion because I am an appallingly slow reader
A pile of books:

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake
Orbital by Samantha Harvey
A Fall of Moondust by Arthur C. Clarke
Exhalation by Ted Chiang
Alien Earths by Lisa Kaltenegger

On the Kindle:

City of Golden Shadow by Tad Williams

I've sold my soul to short stories. Sure, there are some ideas I have that are committed to being novella/novel length, but short stories have ensnared me heart and soul

What I'm realizing through writing long-form is I'll always return to shorts as well. Long is a commitment, but shorts is where I get to experiment more liberally, re-discovering my writing and voice with each tale.

This was so so beautifully written Safiya. Feels like a genuine piece of folklore, so poignant yet gentle. Also I did not know you had Scottish ancestry??
