Flip by Ngozi Ukazu--utterly lovely YA about a Black girl and white boy who swap bodies. Fandom inflected, balances artfulness and tropeyness perfectly. Asks more questions than it answers. Just great.

An unflinching and erotic story that examines abusive relationships and their emotionally fraught nature, loneliness and the need for connection, and the fabric of space time as a partner!

(Insert joke about "hard" science fiction here.)

@pnh.nielsenhayden.com the sales rep for Norton used to drink at the bar I tended back in 2019 and pitched this series to me so hard and I really should have listened back then. the fact that they have so many imitators becomes immediately comprehensible once you actually read them. #5 is SO GOOD

This book absolutely fucking rips. I would not actually call it cozy--it's in conversation with NYC's early gay memoirs, Edmund White esp., a slice of life family story about folk music set in Greenwich Village. Unbelievably beautiful.
I do NOT go in for cozy, but Cat Sebastian’s latest is an actually palatable comfort read about redemption and hope in what looks like an impossibly difficult historical moment. Definitely written for fall 2025.

Two thumbs way up.

Critical error!!!! Understandable, ofc.

My roommate and I have anthropomorphized the vacuum and the plants. we're absolutely not allowed to pretend we would do anything less to cats. We found an injured crow and referred to him as "our son" for a week.
My wife and I were trying to keep a layer of separation between us and our new barn cats. It... did not work.

And as a bonus, something I grabbed at Cymera, Sacred Bodies (Ver) is also about human/creature relations, but in a 2ndary world conjured into being with incredible deftness for a relatively short comic. Really excellent worldbuilding and incredible art.

And if you're somewhere that pepper spray was deployed, if you felt it in air ... it's on your clothes and in your hair. Don't be like me, and sit down and write up an e-mail about the protest before you deal with the contamination.

Scott's stand is principled. I'm so disappointed that the company that bought the print magazines is blaming authors rather than taking responsibility for their own bad contract and changing it for everyone.
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...
