This shouldn’t be news, but the Government isn’t listening so it has to be repeated ad nauseum…
Relying on trees to offset New Zealand's emissions years into the future is putting "a significant number of eggs in one basket", the Climate Change Commission chief executive has warned politicians.

Coalition Government ministers insist their reform of regional councils is "not a power grab" – but all the evidence suggests the opposite, to democracy's detriment.

NZ has had two major reforms of subnational government so far: 1876 and 1989

As the guy who literally wrote a book on the demise of that first system, *and* as someone who generally supports more unitary authorities, my considered opinion is that this proposal is completely insane
No more regional councils - major shake-up of local government announced
The government says it is not a power grab, but about "making local government fit for purpose".

So ... the government just forced us all to have referendums on *existing* Māori wards because Local Communities Deserve Choice, but now they're unilaterally abolishing our regional councils because they don't like the Choices we made?

We can't get off this path by tinkering around the edges; we need a radical revisioning of how our government and society function.

One thing that NZers need to understand is that going for 100% completion on the original Rogernomics agenda is not a reversible thing. We will need to transform all this wreckage into something new. We can't just "rebuild", as has been proven many times over.

Since #TheHollowMen & #DirtyPolitics were published, I haven’t had much respect for Matthew Hooton, but his opinion piece in the latest - and possibly last - edition of Metro Magazine, was both balanced and incisive - this line sums it up:
