Last fall, I was tired of hearing that support for bikes came from a narrow minority of Berkeley, so I commissioned a poll to ask how broad support is here. The answer is that the vast majority of the city, 73%—and even a majority of people who do not bike—support adding more bike infrastructure.
I’ll believe that AI can make art when it can get arrested for the art it makes.

"December 2nd, Berkeley City Council will have a hearing on a new fire code, and city staff has recommended the adoption of the 26-foot rule."

If you live in Berkeley, they need to hear your opposition.

Darrell has the details near the bottom of this post.
New post: a week of hectic back and forth with fire officials and city council over Berkeley street festivals brings out into the open a conflict in city halls across USA. Fire depts opposition to traffic calming and safety measures. Is there a solution?

The Fire Department vs. Traffic Safety Advocates
Street safety advocates are butting heads with fire officials. Swift fire response does not have to come at the cost of lives on the roadway.

I think we should stop letting public figures get away with saying "pause" when they mean "nuke from orbit."

If what really works to reduce the murder rate,

That has been shown to work, in city after city,

And validated by decades of peer-reviewed research,

Is less expensive, less cruel, and less racist?

Then why do we insist on doing the more cruel, more racist option that costs hundreds of billions?

Just had two different drivers nearly hit me, one of them very deliberately while I was in a crosswalk. The other was an older driver who stopped at a red light and then plowed through the red while I was biking across the intersection. This year I’m thankful I didn’t just fucking die. Fuck cars.

I get why people are excited about Waymos. I really do.

But, I think we can also look back at the effects of a century of enthusiasm for cars and say, “Going all in for cars hasn’t worked out well at all.” And from that, try to see what the next century holds, and try to do better *now*.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

This was me a few years ago. If you're ebike-curious, follow that urge, join us! You will be happy you did. Let me know if you want advice on how to get started.
Yesterday on my way to the gym I hit 500 miles on my ebike. Before I got it, I basically never biked, so almost all of those trips would have been by car. It was ~40 degrees out and I was on my way to swim when I hit 500 miles. Absolutely life changing.

In Monrovia, California, protesters are purchasing 17¢ ICE scrapers from Home Depot and immediately returning them to create long lines and slow down the entire store. Their aim is to disrupt sales and convey a message opposing ICE raids occurring in their neighborhood.

I coauthored an opinion in Berkeleyside today, focusing on how the 26foot street clearance the Fire Department requires is being interpreted in ways that harm the city.

Opinion: Berkeley should rethink rule requiring 26-foot clearance for fire trucks on city streets
Selective enforcement of an optional state fire code rule has harmed street fairs and farmers markets. If applied uniformly, many streets would lose half their parking. A policy better tailored to Ber...

Lurie just held a press conference on the steps of City Hall saying he would always defend trans rights and declaring today Transgender Immigrant Day in San Francisco.

Last night, he attended a xenophobe and transphobe’s fundraiser as the featured guest.
Just got back from protesting ConnectedSF's gala. This org's leader Marie Hurabiell tweeted that trans women aren't women and undocumented people are violent criminals. And Mayor Lurie was a featured guest helping her fundraise! Clearly, Lurie is not good at vetting people. 🧵

I'm reminded of a story I heard from two famous performers. They'd gotten into a spat with another performer through interviews, each side talking trash about the other. After a couple of rounds, their foe—far less clever—wrote privately and asked, "What should I say next? This is working for us."

Just making sure we’re all aware of this. As primaries get going, ensuring none of the terrible, horrible, aspiring Democratic presidential candidates make headway will be one of the most important fights. Let’s not lose!
Buttigieg polled an impressive 0% with Black voters. Zero. Percent.

Do you know how kind and friendly Black voters are? Everyone gets like 3%, just for showing up! You have to work to go down from there!

It's 2025, And I still run into people that don't know why Black voters don't like Buttigieg.
This is a straightforward Republican attack line, what the fuck is he doing

I saw a number of family bikes with kids on the back even in today’s pouring rain and strong wind here in Berkeley this morning. A lot of great clothing for the weather, too (including a kiddo in a full snow suit)!
