If I pointed a loaded assault rifle at someone in the street with the obvious intent of intimidating them, I would be arrested and charged with assault (or worse).

Happening now in Minnesota: Protestors were sprayed as ICE launched yet another federal raid in St. Paul. Communities are standing their ground while agents escalate force.

Photojournalist @DPet_KARE11News captured these scenes in real time.

One time before smart phones I had a long walk with a friend where he kept insisting frogs were invertebrates for some reason. Cleared up pretty quick once we got home to the Internet. I often reflected on how that whole conversation wouldn’t have happened with smart phones. Now, though
It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

You can appreciate the scale of the unusual polar warming in Oct 2025 when you look at both poles at once. Antarctica was not just warmer than average on net, it was anomalously warm almost everywhere & by quite a bit (& this is with a rel. warm ref period, '86/15). Similar for the high Arctic. 🥵🧪⚒️🌊

Whenever I see local police collaborating with ICE, or taking anti-immigrant stances themselves, I think about this line of argument from Police and the Empire City about how police in the early 1900s celebrated the rise of deportation as a possible solution for solving xenophobic crime panics.

i'm going to sound sarcastic here but genuinely one of the most interesting aspects of LLMs is that they are proving that evil is real, by which i mean if you train them to do one bad thing they start doing other bad things that you have not trained them to do

Meet our new family member.

Rescuers found him living behind a liquor store near Livernois & 6 Mile.

They thought he was a girl because he was protecting and raising 3 sick kittens despite being only 6 months old himself. He’s not the mom or the dad, he’s the dad who stepped up 😭

Now he is home!
