DOGE, the gift that keeps on giving dead children.
The death rate among children under 5 is expected to grow this year for the first time in the 21st century, researchers say. A key factor, they say, is cuts to U.S. and other foreign aid

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Despite the fact Amazon screwed up my pre-order of the Tom & Jerry anthology set (reserved in September, but changed my received date to the end of December), still looking forward to it.

So of course, I have to share the one song from the series that has lived in my head rent-free since age 6:

This video illustrates something I'm always telling new Tennesseans: our weather is so variable because the jet stream moves back and forth right above us. This shows how the temperature can drop 30 or 40 degrees overnight.
The Arctic flood gates are opening up, as a strong & warm (relatively) block grows over Greenland. That warmth will shove the frigid Polar Vortex south, with multiple cold plunges in the batters box for the next 10-15 days in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

The Boring Company says about their tunnels: "the final transportation system is zero-emissions with the most energy-efficient (as measured by kW-hr per passenger mile) available". The last part seems incorrect. Can someone who knows something about electric buses help me?

Not to defend Olivia Nuzzi, who broke every rule in journalism and promoted a charlatan to his current position. But it's incredibly telling that she will lose her job, but RFK Jr. gets to stay in his job despite the reports of his drug use, his affairs and his defenestrating of public health.

Many viruses don’t just cause one disease. They have “sequela” that can be devastating. The way the chicken pox virus causes shingles is one example, but others are far worse.

The COVID vaccine doesn’t just reduce suffering, it saves lives. Millions of lives. …

Cool picture, cool thread.
Greenland without its ice sheet looks like a big bath tub. Inside the ringing mountain ranges, the ice, covering 85% of Greenland, is a mile thick (1.7 km) on average.

The weight of this massive layer of frozen freshwater pushes down on the land, meaning the bedrock is mostly under sea level.

I genuinely think this (from: sootyempiric.blogspot.com/2025/08/woke...) is going to be lots of people's unironic take on these years. I do think Woke 2 will be a thing, and I don't think this was inevitable but rather the result of very bad strategic choices being made by the right and centrists.

The interesting thing about the TN-07 vote is that Van Epps doesn’t seem like a terrible candidate—the 15 point swing in favor of Democrats isn’t primarily a candidate effect.

If 2026 is anything close to a +15 environment for Democrats, it’s going to be the biggest wave election in a long time.

Note that the map is misleading in this election-- Only half of Davidson County votes are in, but many of the rural counties have 80-90 % in. There's a lot more Beyn votes to be counted.
