I've never understood the adulation of Shackleton, he seemed liked a dick, but both my father and father-in-law had identical books about him - he must have been idolised by that generation. Now there's more evidence to back up the "he was a dick" position. www.popularmechanics.com/science/a688...

A groundbreaking new study has reshaped our understanding of the sinking of Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance in 1915.

One of the great writers on #Tarot was #Akron - the writer behind the #Giger Tarot. I've had a go at using the deck he created - have a read of the results at tarot117.wordpress.com/2025/09/11/a...

Card of the day: JUDGEMENT. An ancient Turkish proverb speaks of the tiny sound of a gnat as sufficient to a person of good judgement, while to one who lacks good judgement the sound of an entire orchestra is of no help.

Thanks, Sheila. I really found the thesis inspirational - I think there's so much more to reflective practice than I've considered up to now. Looking forward to putting some of it into practice. Stay tuned :-D

Dear science communicators, enthusiasts & joyful sharers of things that blew your mind 10 minutes ago!

It's inevitable you'll meet folk who say "EVERYONE knows that, u r SO DUMB."

Just send this cartoon (xkcd.com/1053/) - it covers everything important.

Then, if necessary, Mute or Block 'em. 😅
Famous xkcd cartoon saying:
I try not to make fun of people admitting they don't know things. Because, for each thing "everyone knows" by the time they're adults, there are on average, 10,000 people in the US hearing about it for the first time.
Math: fraction who have heard about it at 30 is 100%, and US birth rate is 4 million a year, so that's 10,000 per day on average.
When I make fun of people, I train them to not tell me when they have these moments, and I miss out on all the fun."

To conserve his reserves,
Schirra
stopped his stabilization rockets and,
drifting,
he sometimes found himself
upside down
without being bothered,
because he was his own planet.

The Jacques chocolate set from 1963 follow the same pattern, but with a very poetic twist - here's the card about Schirra (one of the Mercury 7 and the first to manually fly a spacecraft).

I have a thing for collectible cards from the 50s and 60s about the space race. They always start off with rockets in China, Montgolfier, etc. and current space programme and then end with what will happen in the future - moonbases travel to Mars, contact with aliens, as if that's a done deal.

Somebody should point out that if for example insulin at $100 goes down 1300% it means they pay you $1200 to take it away.

L Frank Baum anticipating AI's attitude to non-AI “Such brains as you have are of the common sort that grow in your heads, like weeds in a garden. I’m sorry for you people who have to be born in order to be alive.”

I'm hoping no-one fed the Oz books into any LLMs. We don't want them getting ideas.

My most common go to Simpsons quote? "Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand" vies with "To alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems." for top position.

what's the stupidest/randomest Simpsons quote that lives in your head rent free? Mine is the urge to say "you said go to bread" every time I am about to head to bed.
