Every single insurance company spends $5 billion per week to familiarize us with quirky spokespeople and their anthropomorphic animals. We spend 1/5th of our lives watching them caper about. They're able to do this because of the profit margins on the important product they produce (denied claims).

So yesterday marked the beginning of the winter ball season. But it also was the first day of winter ball under a new agreement between the winter ball leagues, MLB and the MLBPA.

How the new deal may lead to more affiliated players playing winter ball:

New MLB, Winter Ball Deal Opens Door For More Players To Participate
The agreements could make up to 60 more players per organization eligible to play winter ball.

Here's a fun stat, assuming Max Scherzer gets into a game, that would be his 6th team he's appeared in the postseason with (previous: Tigers, Nationals, Dodgers, Mets, Rangers)

That would tie a record with David Wells, Josh Donaldson, Kenny Lofton, and Fernando Rodney

At one point last season I think Jonathan India and Ty France were leading baseball in HBP and I was trying to come up with some theorem to explain why country-specific-surnames were so prone to it.

Apparently there is an HBP subculture
I think the game would be poorer if we didn't have dudes like Anthony Rizzo and Derek Dietrich who love getting on base with a bruise, personally.
it is *absolutely* a differentiable skill and it is also one that consists entirely of gamesmanship and ref-working and arguably a skill area that should not exist in a fairly officiated game

I will never forget Josh Norris calling me in the first week of the 2022 MiLB season and telling me he had seen the best prospect he would see all year.

Jackson Chourio keeps living up to the hype.

Aaron Judge is showing offensive performance that we've rarely seen in baseball history. For continuing that in 2025, he's Baseball America's Major League Player of the Year. [

The Mets since June 12, when they were 21 over, best record in baseball:

38-55

The only NL teams with more losses since that day:

Rockies 64
Nationals 58

They had a worse record than the 44-48 Pirates after that date.

Unimaginable.

And that puts a lid on the 2025 Colorado Rockies.

They went 43-119, finishing with a mind-boggling -420 run differential.

With 10 HR and a .789 SLG in his last 23 games, Aaron Judge is now 11th among RF in JAWS and 4th in 7-year peak.

Minor Threat played its final show on September 23, 1983 at the Lansburgh Cultural Center in Washington.

3 years after the formation the band broke up after Brian Baker left and switched to Dag Nasty

I have been listening to the latest Pelican album constantly while writing/editing.

Highly recommended if you like driving rock instrumentals with noisy but melodic guitar. So many great sound textures on this one.

You’re welcome. I heard them for the first time about 7 years ago. Their back catalog is strong too

I love the noisy, driving instrumental rock sound. Another favorite The Mermen

Any recs?

Wow! Thanks for the review. I was not familiar with the band, but I was hooked from the first notes.
I agree with this reviewer.

The new Pelican album is awesome
"As post-rock benchmark albums go, this one is going to be in the top ten of all time easily, it’s slick, emotive, and leaves you feeling better every single time you listen to it."
