Fire is great. We couldn't have built civilization without it.

Capitalism is great. We couldn't have built civilization without it.

but free market capitalism isn't the solution to everything, just like we don't light everything on fire just because it burns.

Democrats should get behind a voter ID law that only goes into effect when 99.9% of the eligible population has a valid ID and automatically pauses when the number falls below that. The fact that Republicans would never accept this would make clear what the real point of voter ID laws is.

I don't specifically want to kick a hornet's nest this morning but I will point out

1. the way some of y'all talk it's like either we don't have presidential primaries AT ALL or you are assuming A LOT

2. We have a whole-ass MIDTERM ELECTION between now and Nov 2028. CAN I VOTE IN THAT ONE FIRST

There is a certain urgency in attacking Social Security _now_, while there is still a trust fund they can raid. When they talk about Social Security "going broke", the worry is that we will have spent that $2.7 trillion on the benefits it was always intended to pay for.

I do think there’s a certain type of Democrat that realizes it’s possible we are dealing with a perfect storm where almost any Democrat will win, and are terrified we might nominate radical candidates who will actually engage in needed change instead of status quo corporate centrist bullshit.
One of the interesting things this time around is just how hollow the whole thing sounds. In the past, people have been able to use the empty concept of electability to anoint and position the person they demanded, but now that Republicans are getting obliterated everywhere, that doesn't work.
If I were a Democrat concerned about winning elections and was hearing that a significant number of voters wouldn’t support Gavin Newsom in 2028, I would simply stop pushing Gavin Newsom in 2026.

Since I own zero shares of anything and will work until I die, forever one medical emergency away from penury, why should I care about the Dow?
Something “very important people” never get, likely because it is outside their privileged experience, quite often at our benefit, is that “the economy” isn’t working for most Americans. We are sicker, poorer, not able to send our kids to college, etc. but rich guys and politicians are making bank.
Imagine how the 2024 election might have gone if the coverage of the economy from 2022-24 had been "Joe & Jay stuck the soft landing & the 🇺🇸 economy is running on all cylinders" & if Jeffrey Epstein's buddy hadn't been platformed constantly on every media outlet to convince you it was all sh*t.

Speaking as someone who has many, many complaints about the Democratic Party, “letting them lose” when they’re in a contest with an actual fascist party isn’t very smart. Nor is it remotely fair to say they’ve adopted far right policies on trans rights, immigration, or abortion (??).
chat is it good or bad if the only defense against fascism is voting for one party forever and never letting them lose no matter how far right they go and how much of the fascist's policies around immigration and trans rights and abortion they start taking on over time?
This. Precisely this. Serious people don’t threaten to vote third party, because it’s a tantrum.

I don’t like Newsom at all, I think he’s an amoral opportunist. But JD Vance is quite literally a man who gets his ideas from neo-Nazis. He’s a white supremacist fascist. It’s an easy, easy choice!

"Facebook had to borrow 100 BN USD the other day in order to finance the investment in data centres. Now what they've tried to do is shift that off balance sheets so we don't see that they've run out of cash and they're borrowing money. That's a sure sign that facebook has overreached itself."

Fun fact: when I run DEI workshops about trans stuff (it happens occasionally) one of my strategies is to start by getting people to talk about cyclists and their experiences. This usually works to build empathy, but occasionally it turns out that people actually hate cyclists more than trans people
you'd think the worst thing about cycling would be all the people trying to kill you, but it's actually all the insufferable men who insist on telling you that if you don't ride the way they think you should ride then you're no better than a car driver who hits pedestrians
