I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

Definitely worth a read - this maps directly onto the way tone policing tactics have been used to shield public health and infection control leaders from accountability throughout the pandemic. They kill people, then talk about kindness and hide behind the claim that calling them out is uncivil.

This. Film everything. It's important.
It will become increasingly important for people to take video and protect and save that video so that when there is finally an accounting for what’s happening, there will be evidence.

12/ RESOURCES #ICEout

MN is training LAWYERS to help ppl picked up by ICE. If you witness ICE taking someone away - GET THEIR NAME & ADDRESS, then share with community so lawyers can file quickly.

Thread includes lawyer training info & orgs that need $$ donations.

This is a great thread on LAWYERS getting organized. There's now training that can be used and shared across the country. MN needs help bc filing habeas corpus QUICKLY is important so I understand (I'm not a lawyer)

At one point today, there were 283 Minnesota attorneys doing a training on how to file emergency habeas petitions to keep our neighbors from being shipped out of state and held indefinitely.

That would be the second largest law firm in the state. And that training was just put together this week.

The advice has been for people to try, if possible. It'll also have longer-term value because people from all across the country are sent to those centers. If they try it in another state there will be people ready. W.D. Tex. has some hoops to jump through, but does allow admission from non-TX attys

If someone is barred in W.D. Tex. or D.N.M., very much so. Beyond that, I know there has been some exploration of using non-MN attorneys for intake, drafting, research, and citechecking, but my impression is that we don't yet have the bandwidth to organize those resources. I hope we get there.

Update: Since Jan 9, there have been 12 ICE Air flights out of Minneapolis, MN—a jump from the typical 3 flights/week to Minneapolis. This surge is taking place as people with valid refugee status are being taken from their homes in MN & transferred to detention centers in TX.

It's a fair question. I think it makes sense to have a tiered system where, if something gets thornier, it can be passed up the ladder to someone with more experience. I feel like it'll look like a pyramid, with a wide base of extremely basic petitions which can be done without extensive experience

So, ongoing representation is not usually needed and can ethically be limited in any case. The key to the cases is fast intake with friends and family, since the detainee can rarely be reached and ICE is very often moving them out of state in a day or so. There are very strong templates out there.

These efforts are intended to train up attorneys of all backgrounds to prepare and file. The experience of groups that are up-and-running is that they have to be filed incredibly fast, but that if you can get them in (sometimes with a TRO) judges will often sign off and release them with no bail.

Correction: there were enough attorneys in this training to form the largest law firm in the state. Remember when the Pentagon thought bringing 25 JAG attys to town would help? They generally have little civilian law experience. The Feds are going to need more lawyers.
