An internal letter signed by dozens of legal aid groups warns that the program may soon be contracted out to an ICE technology vendor (and Angelina Jolie's nonprofit).

The cited reasoning? "Women will just go and have babies and quit being doctors anyway, so why let them in and waste our time/resources?"

Which I find fucking HILARIOUS, considering Japan's dumpster-tier birthrate.

I wouldn't want to have a baby in that climate, either.

When I learned about WWII as a kid I wondered how people could be so void of empathy & humanity to do what they did to millions of innocent people.

It didn't start as concentration or death camps. It began as "they don't belong here" with gov propaganda to normalize stripping people of citizenship.

I looked up the bill because I wanted to know if I was just knee-jerk accepting a narrative in which Newsom sucks because I already think he sucks.

Turns out, no, the dude just sucks.

"...Newsom has vetoed our menopause bill, not one but two years in a row. But that's OK, because he's not going to be governor forever. And with the way he's overlooked women, half the population, by devaluing us in midlife, he probably should not be our next president either."

The bill mandates medical continuing education include credit hours in menopause diagnosis and treatment.

And that insurance actually cover diagnosis and treatment as determined by the physician.

Which Newsom vetoed explicitly because it doesn’t let insurance companies try to screw patients.

Look I've been suicidal & not only that I've come to terms with the fact I'll always struggle with suicidal ideation. Those feelings crest & peak & people commit the act opportunistically at a low, when if they'd stuck around they'd see they felt better just a bit later. So yes ChatGPT is killing.

I am a suicide attempt survivor so I’m kind of selfishly interested in prevention and, again, while it may difficult to completely prevent IDEATION, what ChatGPT does (despite guardrails!) is *cheerlead and facilitate* completion. You can come back from ideation but not a chat-optimized completion.
This is not true. This is argument that pro-gun people use to discount red flag and waiting period laws. Ease of access and lethality (let alone cheerful instruction in the best method!) is the #1 predictor of attempts leading actual completion. The more barriers, the more people live.
I think it's fine Chat GPT is telling people how to kill themselves. They'll figure it out one way or another if they're serious.

This is not true. Studies show that suicide attempts most often stem from brief ideations and impulses and, further, that only a small minority of those that attempt ever try again. This is why gun waiting periods reduce suicides whenever implemented.
