Me, wearing a black top, a black and silver scarf, a black and gray skirt

Student: Is today a special day where we have to wear all black? Is it a sad day?

Me: No, I'm just a New Yorker and sometimes I wear a lot of black!

What I Teach 3rd Graders
Lisa Shulman
Poem over 3 screen shots.

What I Teach 3rd Graders
Lisa Shulman

I teach how to shake hands
and raise hands
and clap hands
to appreciate.
How to listen
how to wait
how to hold a pencil
(not a gun).

I teach that every sentence
has a subject
(The man)
and a predicate
(is shooting children)
and some have a prepositional phrase
(in their classroom.)
I teach them to pause
at a comma, to stop
at a period
and a ? means you are asking
(Why? Why? Why?) I teach them to multiply
legs on dogs
fingers on hands
(not shootings in schools),
and how in subtraction you start
with the bigger number
and when you’re done taking away
you have less.
(17 less in Parkdale, 15 less in Columbine, 27 less in Sandy Hook.)

I teach about places
(unmarred
by children murdered at school),
the lives of people
who have made a difference
(not a massacre),
how water can be absorbed
or repelled
(like blood on linoleum)
and that some words, like repel,
mean more than one thing. I teach them to walk quietly
in a line when the fire alarm sounds,
to duck and cover
until the earth stops shaking,
and to lay on the floor
(like fish in a barrel)
if a bad man comes.

What I don’t tell them
is in that hellish haze
of gunfire and screams
I plan to toss them like ragdolls
behind bookshelves,
stack them like cordwood
behind cubbies,
that my only calculation
will be how many can I save,
how many will I leave to die?

So when I rescue
a spider from the sink
scoop it into a paper cup
set it down among green leaves,
they breathe as one, relieved,
because I’ve taught them
it’s wrong to kill
small creatures.

Yes, but I've spent years being aware of that one!!

As a middle school teacher, I'm really excited to get further into my curriculum because already twice this year I've accidentally said, "Open your packets to pages six and seven and..."
"Six Seven!!" 😮‍💨

No, for real, though, here’s my proposal:

As soon as you crest into $1 billion, we throw you a party, congratulate you for winning the game, and then we build a bunch of affordable housing and you wake up tomorrow in an apartment with $1000 to your name.

When you win the game, it resets.

I love NYC because when my building's washing machine is down I can go a block away and wash my laundry somewhere else, and then wait at the bar above it with a beer while my laundry dries. But also, why aren't there more laundromat bars?! Come on, NYC!

Kosher restaurants are making some interesting food choices.
Collage of four menu items with pictures and descriptions. 1. Pizza with French fries. 2. Mac and cheese tacos. 3. Mushroom perogies with melted cheese. 4. Penne pasta stuffed inside garlic bread.

Great moment this morning. I went to shul this morning for Rosh Chodesh Elul. We're finally at the end (it's going so slow...) and I'm rushing to finish Barchi Nafshi when I'm suddenly interrupted. Shofar!! I'd thought it was after L'David. Honestly it was fantastic.
Anyway, Chodesh Tov! 📯👑🌿

Seizure medication, wheelchairs, Social Security cards, dentures, urns of ashes, work uniforms — just some of what's been thrown away during cruel, degrading, utterly counterproductive homeless sweeps.

A good time to revisit this gutting @propublica.org story:

Oh look, ICE is copying literal Nazi recruiting propaganda again. The poster on the right is for the Volkssturm, the Nazi militia of older men and boys established during the final months of World War II.
@DHSgov on X: We’re taking father/son bonding to a whole new level.

An eloquent image:

Setting aside the content under the tarp for a moment, teens were asked to make art expressing what it is like to be a teen, and the end result was a mural wrapped in a tarp by adults.

I bet a lot of teens would find this expressive of their experience.

I went to a different location today. And after donating platelets I asked for one of the dry pack things and I got one! They offered an umbrella, too, but I declined.
Small white bag still in plastic wrap that says "I'm a lifesaver."

Every time I see conservative fearmongering about how dangerous the NYC subway is, I feel the need to defend it. I grew up in Ohio. It’s cars that are dangerous. It’s car accidents that are terrifyingly common. I’m not being dramatic when I say the subway is one of the best parts of my life now.

Yeah, the article talks about the difference between warning pavers and directional ones. I was just getting you started on how to look into it if you wanted the right words, but yes, they're for accessibility and are in all sorts of places.

To me this feels like a similar moment to Sandy Hook.

If republicans aren’t willing to accept responsibility and change policy to protect young white christian girls in Texas, they won’t do it for anyone.

Reporter: Do you think the federal government needs to hire back any of the meteorologists who were fired?

Trump: I would think not. This was a thing that happened in seconds. No one expected it. Nobody saw it. Very talented people are there, they didn’t see it
