I’m probably the most impressed AND grossed out by the several people who gifted an actual red Onion until the paper arrived in the mail. That’s some smelly-ass ingenuity right there.

I'm not sure its possible to fully stop someone sufficiently motivated doing something they want to do, but I think about the idea of making software so convenient to use for good and so inconvenient to use for evil that anyone wanting to be evil has to basically just write their own new software.

The concept of trying to develop software in such a way that your design choices steer/bias your software towards only being useful for ethical/well intended purposes is interesting to me.

I still recommended the products, but buying new from @frame.work is no longer part of my recommendation. Growing the tent to support people who fundamentally disagree with core open source values will end up shrinking the tent.

I thought FW was better than this

As a @frame.work laptop owner, the companies recent promotion and inclusion of people in the community who have a long and un-reversed track record for being harmful to other open source communities makes me sad.

Best question from Texas LinuxFest:

"If everything is a file in Linux, what kind of file is imposter syndrome?"

Answer: /dev/null - you keep writing to it but nothing actually persists.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Rocky booth. You reminded me why I love this weird, wonderful world.

The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little."

‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.”

So a napkin is a little tablecloth.

Seems like Youtube and open software communities are dealing with two sides of the same "how to track usage" coin.

Arguably open software communities have it worse because a proprietary metrics endpoint is not as feasible to add to an open project vs a proprietary one.

Maybe theres a better way

I've always kinda wondered why youtube doesn't track views based on downloads of the video data.

Its probably flawed in many ways (download could be cached and used to serve many views, stats can be skewed by video download tools/archival efforts/bots, etc).

Could this be one of the first somewhat large scale natural experiments that concretely show data on the prevalence of ad blocking tools?

Many affected youtubers have shared their analytics data to help figure out what's happening.

Theres a reason theres a #clippy in my avatar: #righttorepair

New "reverse ransomware" tactics are being used to break the devices you own post-sale, then sell you the fix as a subscription.

Let's reform the copyright laws that enable this deceptive behavior:
