Every bus stop personally shoveled out is an act of heroism and a policy failure.
How many bus stops have you shoveled out today?
(Wasn't counting but I think this was #4)

Catherine O’Hara was such a gem. My friend Tom Bachtell captures her perfectly with his drawing.

Relying on solely adjacent property owners to clear sidewalks is a recipe for an inaccessible walking network.

The kids are now saying “oxygen nitrogen” to mean 6-7. 😂

My teen told me they had been using @transitApp after I told them about it. They said they blew a friend’s mind when they showed her how to track the bus. 😂

Crowd is massive, now overflowing Congress Plaza and taking up a block-long stretch of Michigan Avenue.

Reminder: this event was only announced yesterday.

I met an absolutely lovely academic who asked whether my department back home is affected by ICE -- a question dramatizing how little info is getting out.

For the record, the small example I chose:

My dept has a carpool to pick up grad students of color who can't safely commute to campus alone.

Literally said this exact phrase this morning
Winter in the Midwest.

(Steps outside) “Oh, it’s warm today!”

(Checks temp): 22 degrees.

As someone raised in California but is now a Midwesterner forever, I ❤️ this so much.
In honour of the you know everything etc I'm going to post one of my favourite poems, by Danez Smith: "I'm going back to minnesota where sadness makes sense"

Finally watched “Stand By Me” today. Oof that was brutal (emotionally).

Oh one more. At a nearby elementary school that has a lot of vulnerable families, parents have implemented a buddy system, pairing up with another family to bring over groceries, take their kids to the playground, and do their laundry. It is beyond heartening to see the ways people have stepped up.

THREAD of offers of guest lectures (via Zoom) for Minneapolis-area classes so faculty can offer their students a top-quality education while dealing with other crises

Seeing tons of extremely generous offers. I'll try to post 'em all here--please add your own w topics you can cover & how to contact
Finally, a note to the many professors in my networks: One other specific, small thing you can do from outside of Minneapolis is reach out to colleagues who are heavily affected (because of their own or their family's risk, or because they're very busy protecting neighbors) and offer a guest lecture

Everything else apart from the federal invasion of my city and state counts for very little right now, but I do want to share that—for obvious reasons—the deadline for this exciting grant opportunity has been pushed back to Friday, February 27th.

We will still be here after the secret police leave.
Minnesota businesses can apply *right now* for a grant to purchase e-bikes for commercial use through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCA) Small Business Environmental Assistance Program!

Linktree of places you can donate money directly, purchase from an amazon list or walmart registry, or places you can drop items off if within the area.

This group does a LOT of great work, and this is the worst time of year to be homeless.

As I was being tailgated down W. River Parkway by a large SUV with tinted windows, the thought occurred to me that it might help if everyone drives a bit slower. Gives observers more time to identify feds.

We have a 20 MPH speed limit on residential streets, let’s weaponize it

💯 Also true when you are a neighbor or friend helping a new parent, person going through cancer treatment or grief. Specifics help people say yes to help.
Mpls: If you are working to support neighbors right now I *highly* suggest avoiding the generic "let me know what you need" and instead asking/offering directly:

"I'm going to the store. Send me a list."

"Do you need shampoo? Fruit? Toilet paper?"

"Can I help with your laundry?"

Check in on your MN friends. Ask how they're doing. If they say:

"Pretty good, you?" They're probably ok.

"Just fine, howryou?" They're struggling, exhausted, hanging on but close to the edge.

"Oh, doin ok" Send help. The situation is desperate.
