I once had a sinus infection go into hyperdrive 12 hours before getting on a 6 hour flight I couldn’t miss. That flight was like a hallucinatory trip to the underworld in some bathetic hero’s journey.

Our first snow at our new home on the isle of Skye. The forecast had alternating bouts of light rain and snow but it’s a couple degrees cooler than they had predicted so we’ve had a lot of fat fluffy snowflakes.

The int’l symbols for On-Off have befuddled me for 40 years. “O” looks like a completed electrical circuit, so it should mean the device turns On. “I” looks like the circuit is not complete, meaning the device is off.

Color me abashed. I’m 54 years old and I just realized the “O” stands for “off.”

Man I want this outfit

The man speaks the truth. Don’t draw attraction to your mankles. For the love of Jiminy H Cricket don’t hike up your pants legs to show off your novelty socks and cottage cheese calves.

If you want to sport something like a cholo grinch driving a lifted cybertruck, buy a $14 tie from a mall kiosk
Just saw this comment with regard to Pete Hegseth's love for fun socks.

I will tell you why fun socks are bad in a tailored outfit. 🧵

Judge Sooknanan: I am trying to do the best I can to fulfill my obligation as an Article III judge. I appreciate you all showing up today, and I particularly appreciate the government's representation. But I'm going to put it on the record again, just so there's absolutely no ambiguity...

Q in High Pasture Cave, on Skye. We were doing a geology tour and he said, with all this limestone are there any caves? Our guide was excited to take us. Most of it is very cramped, and you’re in a stream, but it’s lovely. Next time I’m doing the hard bit including a stretch under water.

I have a cabinet full of herbs and spices to use up before we move. Puff pastry w/blue fenugreek, ground coriander, smoked chile, dried marigold, garlic, cream cheese, butter. Sea salt, sesame seeds, egg/milk wash. Basically Georgian Ajika.

Every cut that the government makes to social services is effectively a tax on women. Because they're the ones who will be expected to fill in the gaps.

My dad was OSS and training for the invasion of Japan in 1945. His task was to swim to shore from a submarine, then sabotage stuff in advance of the invasion.
Something I learned today: The US was so worried about the estimated casualties from invading Japan in 1945 that the stockpile of Purple Heart medals it made in advance lasted through Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War.

It's not just fancy lawmakers. It's why I got out of local politics.
one of the ways in which the madisonian logic of the american system doesn't seem to be working is that ambition *isn't* countering ambition. there are all these lawmakers who just, don't give a shit, even when giving a shit could propel them to political fame and success
seriously, I understand it would be a huge gamble but the right play from some dissident republican senator has a decent shot of making that person president

“In Bed With the Right” is one of my favorite podcasts. It’s always thought provoking, illuminating, and a joy to listen to. I can’t wait to listen to them dissect L&O. I think that show feeds rightwing urbophobia — murders and druggies and sex crimes oh my

Here’s an anecdote. My wife is in the board of a small nonprofit foundation, which just hosted an international medical conference here in the US. The NIH sponsored it, with a $10k grant.

Now bills are due, and the NIH didn’t send the check. And probably won’t….
