Heartbreaking reading, but this Reddit thread gives a sense of the relentlessness of the horror inflicted by ICE, and the damage being done to so many innocent people that doesn't make the news.

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

This is a problem with so much legacy media raising journalists with underdeveloped personal morality, trained to seek “iDEoloGIcaL diVErsitY” and not right and wrong. Because this argument is stupid and puny, and any columnist who can’t call it out immediately is not a serious person.

Counterpoint:

You absolutely do not have to hand it to enslavers
Wilson: Now, one of the things I want to do is say: I’m really glad that slavery’s gone, and good riddance. And I want to say that the Southern slave owner, who read the books of Ephesians and Colossians and 1 Timothy and treated his slaves decently, remembering that he had a master in heaven who he studiously tried to obey — what Paul said slave owners were supposed to do — I would say he was not an orc, and he is part of the reason why slavery ended. In other words, I would say he’s a good guy.

Over the past week, ICE and border patrol agents have clashed with Chicago residents, and federal guard troops arriving in the city might inflame tensions further. Our reporters describe the situation on the ground.

In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it?

If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say?

Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

I fully understand how difficult it is to remain focused on any one particular atrocity but this really ought to be a serious scandal and people need to pay heavy prices for this

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

For those who wonder what a modern postal service could look like, one example is in France, where letter carriers provide check-ins on the elderly for very affordable rates, while completing their routes.

I encourage everyone to read the whole thing

It's not fascist to call fascists fascist.

It's not "dehumanizing" to say that terrorizing entire groups of people - which ICE does - is evil.

No executive order can change these facts.

However, people *can* mess things up for fascists by standing up for community and truth. Like this.

Behold a lovely stamp sheet by Chris Ware ...

... where each stamp shows a moment in the day of a postwoman

apparently it's the first time anyone has tried to tell a story with a stamp sheet

sheet of stamps in a 5 by 4 grid. Each shows a female postal deliverer walking her route and delivering mail, through the grid of a small town's streets. Each panel includes her interacting with different residents of the town, including children on the way to school, people shopping, and more. Different parts of the town show each of the four seasons

Bertrand Russell, at 89 years old, to Sir Oswald Mosley, a man most famous for founding, in 1932, the British Union of Fascists.

I'm all for civil discourse. But everyone can and should draw a line at who they will talk to.

Notice that Russell did not demean himself with incivility, either.
