"I'm not sure if it's quite where you're going, but the argument here echoes a recent book by Ezra Klein. He's a liberal, but he also attributes much of the cost to liberal policies that pay too much attention to rules. He made this argument in the book "Abundance."

tragedy is that in our system the "you" that builds housing is developers who generally only want to build in areas where they can "guarantee" a steady and constant increase in value and therefore rent price. And if you cap that increase they don't invest in building bc they're parasites

my understanding is not that rent stabilization is bad, it's the fact that stabilizing rent doesnt fix the housing shortage. but fun fact to all you neoliberals, you can build more housing!!!! and make it rent stabilized!!!!! you can do both!!!!!!!!

You absolutely do not have to give it to them: rent stabilization DOES WORK LONG TERM and moreover is *necessary* for providing tenants and neighbourhoods with good quality of life
